Thanks so much again to Ellesea for this opportunity to share with
her readers about the newest release in my series ‘A Little Hotel
in Cornwall’. Filled with secrets, romance, and an unexpected
crossroads for the heroine Maisie, it promises to be the most
exciting installment so far. For those who haven’t joined the
series yet, I thought it might be helpful to do a post on some of the
things that fans of Maisie’s adventures in Cornwall also tend to
enjoy. So here goes!
Fiction with escapist locations:
And Cornwall is probably a top pick
for many people, given the rugged, untamed, and generally
breathtaking nature of its landscape. And even though Maisie’s
fictional Cornish village of Port Hewer is a rather humble attempt to
capture this beauty (given it comes from the pen of an American
author) which misses the mark sometimes, I’m honored to see reviews
from readers who feel it reflects the spirit of holidays in the
real-life county, whether it’s from someone who lives there or
someone who’s still a visitor with happy memories of its shores. So
if you’re among those who enjoy feel-good books with a travel or
holiday type angle and idyllic locations, then perhaps ‘A Little
Hotel in Cornwall’ would be at home on your e-Reader shelf.
The works of Lucy Maud Montgomery:
With their idyllic village settings, plucky heroines, and spirit of
adventure, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s stories were a major influence
when creating Maisie’s life abroad in Cornwall. Even the concept of
an impulsive young woman with a love for literature and writing can
be traced back to her books, from Anne of Green Gables to
Emily of New Moon. And the setting of a grand hotel where
exciting things happen was partly inspired by the White Sands in the
television show Road to Avonlea, which was loosely adapted
from the works of Montgomery.
British Period Drama:
Because even with its contemporary setting, the world of ‘A Little
Hotel in Cornwall’ is meant to evoke the richness and color of a
period piece, partly due to its setting at a historic hotel with
1920’s style glitz and glam. In addition to the fictional White
Sands, the inspiration for the hotel’s grand atmosphere came from
manor houses like those featured on Downton Abbey and
Upstairs, Downstairs (and even had some real life inspiration
from the breathtaking Headland Hotel in Newquay). The guests who stay
at the hotel where Maisie works are often of the posh but eccentric
variety, such as the elderly earl and his scheming family members in
book two of the series, a cast of characters that might have felt
equally at home in a classic Agatha Christie novel. And the quaint
village of Port Hewer lends a different sense of the old-fashioned to
the story, along with the cosy little vicarage where groundskeeper
Sidney Daniels can always be found hard at work on some new task.
Sidney, incidentally, was heavily inspired by the role played by
James Norton in the period-set ITV mystery drama Grantchester.
So if you happen to enjoy any or all of the above, I do hope you’ll
consider adding the books in ‘A Little Hotel in Cornwall’ to your
TBR pile. The first four installments are currently available, with
the fifth book already on pre-order!
But when the diamonds are stolen and Sidney is accused by the authorities, Maisie's dilemma as a writer is pushed aside out of fear that his future in Port Hewer is in jeopardy. Desperation to prove that someone else is behind the theft will lead Maisie to uncover a very different secret outside of jewel thieves and village rumors ... one that could change her life and her future forever.
Can Maisie deal with the latest secrets exposed — including those that paint Sidney's past in a questionable light? And as summer's dawn alters her idyllic life in Cornwall, will Maisie's feelings for Sidney change as well?
