Don't Lie to Me

Bad For You Series

Amber Bardan returns with a heart-stopping third installment in her high-octane, highly addictive Bad For You series

A fling with her best friend's reclusive business partner should've been harmless.

When Emma meets him, the only way she's looking to be tied down is in the literal sense. But Avner—shady hacker, off-the-books investigator, occasional spy—takes her breath away. He's the first man who doesn't turn to mush under her sexual spell: a fact that makes what's between them very different, and very real.

Beautiful and uninhibited, Emma is everything Avner thought she would be and more. Yet his deadly past and dark duties can never be forgotten…not even as he succumbs to their seductive intimacy. But for the first time he's after something of his own, as well.

And now that he's found Emma, he'll protect her, no matter what. Because anything worth loving is worth fighting for.

But nothing about Avner is remotely harmless.

Soon, Avner has infiltrated Emma's personal life, stalled her career and nearly destroyed everything she's worked for—all in the name of protection. Desperate and heartbroken, drawn into a secret criminal underworld in her quest for understanding, Emma discovers the truth: Avner's secrets are far more devastating than his lies.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you're looking for with an HEA/HFN. It's a promise!

“You’re breathing fast.” The sun hit his face, turning his shrewd eyes deep amber and gold. “What are you afraid of?”
My nails scraped the underside of the ledge.
I didn’t glance at the water, the greater of the two things that right then truly scared me. “You’re all wet.” I raised a hand I wished were steady and set it on his broad shoulder.
You’re very—” my touch smoothed over his slippery skin “—very sexy, all wet, Avner. That’s why I’m breathing fast.”
His nostrils flared a fraction. “That’s a reason.” His grip tightened on my thighs. He pulled me closer, and claimed the space between my knees for his own. “But we both know that it’s not the only one.”
My breath caught. I grabbed both his shoulders.
Do you always flirt with fear, or only with me?” He dragged my hips. My ass scraped on tiles through my bikini briefs, and my heart knocked against my ribs.
What are you talking about?”
He slid me a little more. One more inch and I could slip right into the pool. But his arms came around me, and he lifted me against him. My chest slid over his. I wrapped my legs around his waist, and clung. Water lapped around my calves—my knees.
His mouth pressed into my hair as though he were telling a secret. “Does it turn you on to be a little bit afraid?”
Adrenaline plowed through me, lifting my stomach like a theme-park ride, making my lips tingle, and fingers shake.
I’ve asked myself why.” He grabbed my ass and stepped back from the edge. I held on, my entire body pulsing with electric buzz. “Why does this woman who resists me, also lure me?” His words pierced through the howl of blood in my ears. “Why does she look at me like she’s in the middle of the dream, when she also trembles against me?”
Water climbed around us, moving toward my waist. I clutched him with the full force of my muscles. My head spun. I breathed into the feeling of something between panic and delirium.
His breath poured in a hot, hoarse whisper. “Why does she struggle, when she’s wettest when I hold her down?”
I twitched. My back met a solid force. The other side of the pool. I reached behind me with one arm for the ledge, but hung on to Avner with my other.
With that space between us, I saw his face, impassioned so fiercely he could’ve been angry—chin low, gaze hooked on me.
He wasn’t done with whatever he was doing. “You came to the edge, and I saw right here—” he released one hand from my waist and touched the base of my neck “—your heart pounding like it were about to break through skin.”
My pulse leaped against his touch, leaving no doubt he’d detect every little variation in the beat.
The same way it did in Italy when you’d step out onto a balcony. Yet, you lean over railings and dip your toes anyway.” He moved, his touch circling my throat, baring me back against the edge. “Just like you come after me.”
My head swirled, woozily and not so different to when I’d been drugged. His voice moved through me, through my memory, tempting out flashes of things—like the first time I’d turned up to a fight. Took a punch. A real punch designed to knock me down. The first punch that hadn’t been from my father. How my blood trembled, scared yes, but alight with exhilaration. Because I chose it and owned it.
He drove his big hard body against mine. “You’re afraid because I’m stronger than you and that turns you on.” He squeezed—just enough for the pressure to flare without choking. “You’re scared right now, that I could drop you…”
My eyes flared, heart stopped, breath vanished.
But you know I’ve got you.” He released my throat.
I didn’t fall. Not with his body holding me up. I’d never fall with Avner. That’s why he was the first time I’d taken a risk on a man.
My chest constricted—hard.
And now we both know why you’re here.” He tugged at my hair, jerking my head back, but I could hardly see him through the building sheen. “I’m your darkest desire.”
I shuddered, shivered, shook, but couldn’t deny it.
He was the fantasy I never let myself have—dangerous and safe.
Attentive and possessive.
Frightening and irresistible.
I’m your darkest desires, Emma, and I intend to fulfill them all.”

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two books in the Bad For You series, so couldn't wait to find out what Amber Bardan had planned for us this time around. Don't Lie To Me is a standalone novel, although I highly recommend you read Didn't I Warn You and Didn't You Promise too.

Avner Malfacini's focus is solely on his business dealing. He hasn't the time or inclination to get involved with a woman in his line of work. He's instantly drawn to Emma, so indulges in her for just one night...except it's not enough. Only will his possessive overbearing personality be too much for the first woman to have caught his imagination in years.

Emma is instantly attracted to Avner, the dark brooding business associate of her best friend's soon to be husband Haithem. She's only interested in him to satisfy her sexual needs, however, Avner is a man who keeps a hold of whatever he wants and Emma is a woman he's unwilling to let go of.

Their pair has combustible chemistry which makes for a volatile relationship, at least in the beginning. Both have secrets they are keeping to themselves whilst trying to incorporate their work around each other without compromise. Only this leads to suspicion and misunderstanding as trust is sought. Avner is an alpha male who's used to getting what he wants, yet Emma is a strong, determined woman who's unwilling to hand over her independence to someone like Avner.

The author has woven an intriguing, sexy and suspenseful plot around Avner and Emma, set against an international backdrop as their journey takes them to Italy, India and then back to Australia. The focus of the story is primarily about the protagonists and their magnetic attraction but we also get to see how their lives are still strongly connected to Haithem and Angelina. As the layers are peeled away, mysteries are revealed and personal hurdles are overcome resulting in a satisfying happy ever after.

Connor knows better than to get personal with clients. Yet there couldn't be anything more personal about his feelings for Charlize. He'll win her trust, preferably one orgasm at a time.

She came right at him.
Connor leaned back in his seat. Shit. You’d think five-years in the job, he’d have more discretion.
But what red-blooded man wouldn’t stare at her?
She weaved between tables, hips swaying, full-fucking-irresistible cleavage peeking out from her blouse.
He kept his eyes on his glass, even if his peripheral was having a feast.
Hi.” Her voice was as lush as the rest of her.
He’d fucked up. She’d noticed him watching and now there’d be a confrontation. If he was compromised, then he’d be forced to take matters to the next level.
He looked up.
Mother-fucker.
Jet-black hair flowed over her shoulders. He’d seen her tug that hair from its ponytail and fluff it. Cheeky, attention-seeking minx. It hadn’t been so bad from over there. He hadn’t been able to smell her as he did now. He hadn’t known she used vanilla scented shampoo then. His fists curled. But her hair wasn’t the problem, even if he kept imagining it curled around his fist. The problem was her wide, almond-shaped eyes the color of butter warming in a pan, melting his brain.
What?”
She flinched, smile slipping, then reached to her front. He tried to stay still, damned hard work, because she reached between those magnificent tits and pulled out a bill. “I’ll give you ten dollars if you kiss me right now?”
He glanced at the money in her hand. Un-freaking-believable. “Do I look like a gigolo to you, woman?”
No, I imagine the scowl would be terrible for business.” She laughed, the husky sound of it had his muscles clenching. “But I saw you looking at me, and I really need you to kiss me, so if the money’s offensive, would you just do it for free?”
Kiss her for free?
It’d cost if he kissed her—no way out of that, but he’d be the one paying.
She held his gaze, then sighed and squeezed the bill back into her top. “Never mind, I must have misunderstood.”
Her big eyes went soft and sad.
Fuck, did she do that on purpose? Did anyone ever actually say no to her?
He scooted back his chair. Well, if was a kiss she wanted, he’d damned well show her how it’s done.
Her lips parted as he rose, and her head tipped back. She gulped. He was used to that. Little women like her realizing they’d bitten off more than they could chew. She probably hadn’t noticed when he’d been seated that he’d have over a foot on her.
Maybe he’d have gone slow, moved in gently, if she hadn’t demanded that last part—right now.
The cheek.
He took a step. She swallowed again. This time he let himself take in the sight of her curves—he let his gaze trail all over her.
He reached for her shoulder, but the next thing he knew he’d buried his hand in that hair he’d been fantasizing about since he clamped eyes on her.

“What about an apple?” I held up the reddest of the two, rotating it back and forth.
I could practically see the thoughts hammering his head the same way they did mine. Maybe his were less obvious, his torment only visible because I witnessed the change in him.
A cola?”
He rested a hand on my thigh. “You eat. I’ll have something when we stop.”
I set the cooler down between my legs, keeping the apple but laying my other hand on his.
Hmm,” I said.
He glanced at me. “What?”
I guess I’m just disappointed.”
He frowned hard enough to make me pity the thing that dared disappoint me. I guess there was more evil in me than I’d known.
Why?”
I sighed as audibly as possible. “Someone swore to fulfill my needs later…” I rubbed the apple against my lips, inhaling its sweetness. “But you’ve been driving all day—and haven’t eaten since six a.m.” I suppressed the spasm forming in my throat, and held my lips even. “Frankly, I don’t believe it’s going to be everything I was guaranteed.”
The brakes squeaked. We jerked to a halt behind the car stopping in front of us. Traffic hummed and groaned outside the car. Inside, silence screamed electric.
The hand beneath mine tightened over my knee.
I took a bite of apple to keep from choking on a laugh.
Is that so?” he asked, his voice more honeyed than the fruit dissolving over my tongue. “And to think I thought you were sweet.”
Haithem turned my hand, raised it and clamped his teeth over the fleshy mound on my palm below my thumb. I gasped, the sting just enough to remind me he had bite. How easily he could chew right through me just like the apple I held, if he ever decided to use his teeth on me.
Now, when I’m good and ready—” He turned his face towards me, let me catch the wicked promise in his eyes. “—I’m going to fuck you like you're not."
Oh, sweet Jesus.
He’d been taking it easy on me all this time? He released my hand and pried the apple from my fingers.
Then ate the apple whole.
I’d never seen someone eat an apple that way—from top to bottom, core and all.
He ate the freaking stem.
He actually ate the stem.
Who eats the stem?
Apparently, Haithem eats stems. I reached between my knees and pulled a cola from the cooler, cracked the lid and took a gulp. Served me right. I got what I wanted…and now I’d get what I wanted…
If I could survive it.

DIDN’T I WARN YOU (Book One) *Recommended reading first*

 Amazon | B & N | Google Play | iTunes | Kobo

My expectations were high as I dived into this second book in the Bad For You series. Ms. Bardan didn't disappoint with Didn't You Promise as we continue the journey with Angelina and Haithem.

There's no doubting the potency of Angelina and Haithem bond in the first book so I'm surprised that their connection became stronger and more intense as their relationship developed. With an alternate point of view, we're exposed to the thoughts of both protagonists at crucial points during their dangerous, secretive expedition as the true magnitude of Haithem plan is revealed. Yet, the way's littered with insecurity, betrayal and deceit. Potential danger always at the forefront as Haithem wrestles with his conscience...should he leave and walk away from Angelina or stay?

Angelina's trust, love and devotion to Hathem are tested to the limits as she comes to terms with the sacrifices – not only her own but Haithem's too. She may have been a shy unassuming, naive young woman before that fateful night she went to Haithem's boat. However, as time moves on, she's more than capable of holding her own within their extraordinary coupling to the point where she is the one to bring the controlling-alpha Haithem to his knees.

The pace is fast, the sexy times are hot, the writing superb!

I strongly recommend you read Didn't I Warn You first to fully identify with the protagonists and their story...it won't disappoint. I highly recommend to fans of Romantic Suspense.
