New Publication Spotlight with an Author Interview: The Warrior's Innocent Captive by Ella Matthews

Q. We're currently in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?

My family have been essential in getting through the dark times of this pandemic. The joy my young children are still experiencing, despite the restricted life they are living, is inspirational.

We’re lucky enough to live close to several beaches. When things are getting a bit bleak, there’s nothing like a blustery walk along the coast to make me feel better.

We’re all in this together, so it’s been really important to keep in touch with my friends and wider family through Zoom and WhatsApp. Having said that, I’m not a huge fan of Zoom. It’s great to see people but I’m not so keen on seeing my own face whenever I speak. It’s made me realise I look like a potato!

Is it wrong to say that a lovely glass of wine at the end of the day has helped enormously? It’s especially delicious after a day of working and homeschooling!

Finally, I think it’s really helped to have my writing. I’ve had a goal and that’s made me focus on something outside of my home life. It also means, that while I can’t actually leave the house to travel anywhere other than work, I can go quite far and wide in my imagination.

Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

As a family, we have two guinea pigs. They’re girls and are called Lotus and Bliss but they are my children’s rather than mine. I do find watching them graze in our garden relaxing, especially when they start popcorn jumping; it’s very cute.

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

I’d say that almost every writer I’ve read has an influence on my writing. I read a lot and I think that everyone can learn something from a well-written novel.

The one author who has made the greatest impact on my writing career is probably Katie Fforde. I saw her give a talk about six years ago and she spoke about how she received rejections for eight years but she’d kept on going. I remembered that when I had my very first rejection (which was pretty soul destroying!) and I was able to pick myself up and keep going. She also suggested joining the Romantic Novelists Association, which I did three years ago. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The Association has helped my writing career in too many ways to count and I will always be grateful for the opportunities they have given me.

Q. Describe your perfect day.

It’s spring and I’m on a long walk with my family. Ideally, the walk will include a beach and some castle ruins. There will definitely be a cafe that sells delicious cakes involved. Later, we’ll come home and have a BBQ with lots of food and good wine.

Q. What project are you working on currently?

I’m working on a new four-book medieval historical series for Mills and Boon. The series begins in the year 1331. King Edward III has only recently taken control of the country from his mother, Isabella, and her lover, Mortimer. Intent on shoring up his control across his kingdom, he forms a band of loyal knights. These four, very different men, are elite warriors who swear an oath of loyalty to the king. They are as tight as brothers and dedicated to their common cause. Each story follows a different knight and the women they fall in love with.

The Warrior’s Innocent Captive by Ella Matthews

An impossible choice:

His family or love

As steward to the Earl of Borwyn, Erik Ward had only admired sheltered noblewoman Linota Leofric from afar – until he has to escort her on a dangerous journey. When she’s kidnapped, he rescues the courageous beauty, revelling in finally having her in his arms. But Erik has a secret plan to reunite his family – now he’s forced to choose between that and his growing feelings for Linota…

Book Blog Tour Stop with an Author Q & A: The Heart Of Doctor Steele by Colette Dixon

I'd like to wish Colette a warm welcome to my blog today and thanks for answering my questions.

Q. We're currently in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?

A: I love this question! I’m big on self-care. These are the things that are getting me through:

  1. Walking for at least 30 minutes right when I wake up in the morning. It helps my mood and energy immensely. I have a treadmill for when the weather is too cold in Chicago.

  1. Sleep—I have always needed 8 hours in order to be pleasant and functional but now I am really making sure not to slack on rest. It’s good for the immune system too.

  1. Vitamins and adaptogenic herbs that help with energy and stress.

  1. Meeting with a friend once a week at least in person outdoors socially distanced or a Zoom chat. These are crazy times and we need friends to commiserate and laugh with.

  1. Slowing down. I’ve allowed myself to let go of being super productive and just be okay with getting through the basics of taking care of myself and my kids and binge watch shows if that’s all I have the energy for.

Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

A: My black and white pit bull, Missy, we rescued in January 2020. She is the sweetest, most affectionate, and intelligent creature.

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

A: Jane Austen made me fall in love with the romance genre so I will give her credit.

Q. Describe your perfect day.

A: Warm, by the ocean, no work to be done. Kids are playing in the waves. I’m enjoying a margarita with my husband.

Q. What project are you working on currently?

A: I’m writing the second book in the Doctor Steele world right now but taking it slow.

The Heart Of Doctor Steele by Colette Dixon

Are the rumors about him true? She intends to find out.

The mysterious Dr. Steele has taken up residence next door, and scandalous rumors about him are spreading through Margaret Landeau’s small Massachusetts town. Rumors of women he’s ill-used and exploited for his experimental surgeries. Never one to believe gossip, Margaret arms herself with a basket of baked goods and ventures to discover the truth from the man himself.

John Steele has lost everything. His parents, his aunt, too many women he intended to save, and his good name. All he has left is his aunt’s home in a far-flung village and a library he’s stocked with whiskey. He has nothing to offer anyone. Especially not the bold woman next door whose passion for healing reminds him of the man he once was.

But when a dangerously ill girl arrives on his doorstep, pleading for help, Margaret is thrust into his world. She will learn who the real Dr. John Steele truly is, and soon, not even his dark past can stop her from fighting for the brilliant doctor she now loves. But he must deny his crushing desire for her—loving a man like him can only cast a shadow over her own bright future.

Colette Dixon writes steamy stories with heart and humor about slightly tortured people who learn how love can heal. For more years than she cares to admit, she worked in a hospital while dreaming up love story plots. A farm girl who landed in Chicago, she loves to eat (food made by others), drink tea, and sun herself at every chance she can get to survive the Midwest winter.

Book Spotlight and Author Q and A: Warwick's Mermaid by Ellie Gray

Welcome to author Ellie Gray and many thanks from me for taking the time to answer my questions. Linn x

Q. We're currently in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?

  • Snacking – unfortunately, being at home for work means I am eating more!

  • Reading – I have re-discovered an appetite for reading, which I am really happy about. In a busy world, taking time out to read can sometimes feel like a luxury. I am loving losing myself in another world, or someone else’s story.

  • Watching films – again, losing myself in a feel-good film is really helping at the moment.

  • Moving house – has been incredibly stressful (as house moves always are), made worse by the pandemic, but it has certainly given me something else to think about. We have also moved into our dream home – a period house – so I am thrilled to be living here and making the house our own.

  • Feeding the birds – over the year, working full time from home, gave me the chance to spend more time in the garden. It was full of birds and I really enjoyed watching them, getting to know the regular visitors. It felt good to connect to something so positive. Since moving into our new home, there are very few birds, but I’ve put out lots of bird feeders and am slowly starting to see more birds visit the garden – hopefully, they will continue to increase as they realise there is food for them here.

Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

Until recently, we had two cats and a chinchilla. Unfortunately, our chinchilla died earlier this year, but he had lived a long and happy life and died peacefully in his sleep. He had such a big personality for such a little furry friend. My daughter recently moved out into her own home and the cats have moved with her, as they were her cats. So, I am currently without any pets, for the first time in my life. I do miss having a little furry friend to talk to, but have to say that I’m not missing all the cat hair!

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

Enid Blyton was my first real introduction to reading, and the worlds and adventures that she opened up to me as a child were amazing. Without realising it, Enid Blyton allowed me to see that writers had the ability to transport readers straight into someone else’s story. As a teenager, I read many Mills and Boon books, and they resonated with me in terms of romance, but also understood my need for a happy ending. Even now, I find it difficult to watch or read anything without a happy ending (or happy for now). The world is a tough and stressful place, particularly now, and I also work in a stressful sector, so I read and watch films for escapism, to escape the harsh realities. I’m a happy ever after girl.

Q. Describe your perfect day.

Spending a sunny day in the garden with my family, laughing, joking, eating and playing silly games. The sun would be shining, birds singing, and there would be no restrictions on being able to hug them. I have a large family, and not being able to see them all year has been difficult, as it has been for so many.

My perfect day would be a very simple day with my family.

Q. What project are you working on currently?

I’m currently working on a romantic suspense novel set in North Yorkshire and at Christmas time. My three published novels have all been contemporary romance, so this is a slight change of genre, but I am really enjoying writing this story, and can’t wait to be able to share it with my readers.

Warwick’s Mermaid

Having escaped an abusive relationship, Chloe MacGregor is determined to put the past behind her. The little cottage high up on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful North Yorkshire town of Whitby is her safe haven, somewhere she is free to be herself.

When the arrival of her new neighbour and boss, Luke Warwick, threatens her peaceful, sheltered life, Chloe is forced to confront her past and to re-evaluate who she really is. Falling in love with Luke is not part of her plan but, to her surprise, Luke is falling for her too. The only thing preventing their happy ever after is Chloe herself. Will she ever truly learn to leave the past where it belongs?

Book Blog Tour Stop and Author Q & A: Blue Skies by Alana Oxford

Ellesea: I'd like to thank Alana Oxford for taking the time to answer the following questions.

Q. We're currently in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?

Great question!

1.I discovered Yoga with Adriene on Youtube and her videos are so calming
and refreshing. I highly recommend them.

2. I try to take walks or at least get outside to relax and just breathe for a little bit.

3. It can be hard to concentrate, but reading good books has also been very helpful.

4. I make sure I hug my husband and kids every day and we laugh about something together every day. Even if someone just tells a silly dad joke, we laugh together and that makes a huge difference.

5. Now that the weather is cooling, a hot cup of tea to start my day is a relaxing ritual.

Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

I have a cat named Daisy. She has beautiful green eyes and she’s mostly orange and black with dainty white “socks.”

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

Michael Lawrence has been a huge influence on my writing career and has also become a treasured friend. I also think Kiley Dunbar is amazing.

Q. Describe your perfect day.

That’s a lovely question to think about.

My favorite place in the world is Oxford, England. I would love to wake up there, on a sunny day, and just wander through town drinking in the history and the beauty of the architecture. A picnic lunch in Christ Church meadow with a view of Tom Tower would be perfect. Punting down the River Cherwell, (with someone else doing the hard work!) A live Shakespeare play in the evening, on the lawn of one of the colleges is hard to beat for evening entertainment.

Q. What project are you working on currently?

I’m going through edits on a contemporary romance about an American librarian and a Scottish artist who share an adorable meet cute at the library.

I’ve worked in libraries since I was sixteen years old. This particular story is loosely based on the true life love story of one of my former co-workers. I got to watch her real life romance play out from the day a handsome New Zealander walked into the building and asked her how he could get a library card. It was love at first sight. They always said I should write a book about them one day. Now I’m finally doing it.

Blue Skies by Alana Oxford

Life isn't always a walk in the park, but when Patrice takes her Pomeranians to the park after a rough day at the office, fate steps in. An unlikely hero comes to the rescue when one of her dogs gets loose. Short, pale, and kind of cute, Seth doesn't have a lot of confidence with the ladies, but he hits it off with Patrice.

But some things might be too good to be true. While Patrice wonders if Seth could possibly be "the one", fate steps in again with a horrible twist. Will it be a deal breaker or just a storm before bright blue skies?

New Book Release Spotlight & Author Q&A: Blooms of War by Suzanne Tierney

Blooms of War by Suzanne Tierney

As part of today's spotlight on the newly published novel, Blooms of War, I asked the author, Suzanne Tierney, five questions. Here they are along with her answers.

Q. We're currently in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?
  1. I have the luxury of living near the beach. So I walk as much as I can. Sometimes it’s just a half-hour. Sometimes it’s hours. The fresh air, the drama of the sea and sky, the motion of the water, the striking of sunlight on sand, all of it is healing and inspiring and grounding.
  1. Since I can’t see most of my friends, we make an effort to Zoom or do text chats. Sometimes, there are things you are willing to admit or share on a text chat that you’d be embarrassed to say aloud to a group. And on text chat, your friends come together and buoy you up with encouragement and no judgment. It’s rather lovely. That said, I still look forward to seeing them in person and sharing a bottle of wine.
  1. Reading poetry. The world is very noisy right now. We’re constantly interrupted by news and the news is never positive. Everything is in flux. It’s hard to make decisions – do I send the children to school? Do I let my in-laws visit or make them quarantine for two weeks? Do I take my dog to the park? Do I have enough paper towels? Am I prepared for the worst case scenario? Is this the worst case scenario? Is it going to get worse?
But in all that noise, there are words and poetry is sharply written, short, digestible, utterly gorgeous. It hits all the emotions and inspires me.

  1. Cooking. Who isn’t cooking right now? The Covid Fifteen is a real phenomenon and I am certainly living proof of the extra weight. But cooking is an act of nurturing and in preparing food, we nurture ourselves and those we are close to. I am lucky to have an active household of children, husband, and pets. And everyone (even the dog—he’s an excellent food tester and thief) has gotten into trying new recipes, working together in the kitchen, debating whether something needs more salt or if we should make strawberry ice cream or lemon sorbet (the answer is always lemon sorbet).
  1. Write. All of that anxiety and emotion has to go somewhere, right? Why not on the page?

Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

We have a gorgeous, lazy, vain, loving goldendoodle. His name is Total. He was named after a polar bear detective in the children’s series Timmy Failure. I sometimes dress him in hats and put him on Instagram. I worship this dog.

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

Gosh, that is an incredibly hard question! Just one???? I think I will go with Jane Austen. You cant’ go wrong with Austen can you? She was keenly observant. She noticed and wrote about the tiny details that reflected so much about a person. She was a romantic. Who doesn’t melt at Captain Wentworth’s “You pierce my soul. I am half agony…” Doesn’t the line just make your heart hurt? And while there are scoundrels aplenty in her books, no one is truly evil. People are flawed. But they are also often kind.

Q. Describe your perfect day.

A perfect day would start with 8 hours of solid sleep. This, however, is rarely possible, so I will amend to say, a perfect day would start with a cup of coffee.

The day would continue to be perfect if there was time to walk in brisk air that smelled of autumn (can someone please make an air freshener that smells like golden leaves and foggy days?).

From there, a chat with a friend, some laughs with my family, the discovery of a good song, a few hours writing, a small moment that makes me pause and remember something beautiful from childhood, an act or ten of kindness towards others (even if it’s reaching on my tiptoes to grab that roll of paper towels the elderly woman next to me cant’t quite get to). Ending the day feeling like there is good in the world, feeling connected, feeling that I have made the place a tiny bit better, that I have lived up to my potential, that I have given love and made others feel happy and connected…

Rinse. Repeat. Pretty please.

Q. What project are you working on currently?

I am writing the second book in Blooms of War, which will tell the story of EyePatch (the hero’s brother) and Charles (Dorothy Charles) as they try to capture the leader of the espionage ring while trying not to fall in love.

After that, I’m planning a three book series about three English sisters who are exiled to Taiwan after WW2. I hope that it requires some travel research. I hope the world has opened up so that we may again travel without fear.

Thank you so much for hosting me on Ellesea Loves Reading! I enjoyed sharing the oddities of my life and I hope that you and your blog followers stay healthy, happy, and connected during Covid-19. We will get through this.

In war, she fell in love.
Vera Betts shouldn’t be falling in love with the enigmatic doctor she suspects of espionage. Reeling from her family’s betrayal, she’s faked her nursing credentials, invented a new name, and run away to the frontlines of the French battlefield. Four years into the Great War and she knows who she is and what she’s meant for—to save the living and sit vigil by the dying. When the cagey-yet-earnest Dr. Nicholas Wallace arrives, so do mysterious explosions destroying hospitals. Even as Nick raises her suspicions, he lowers her defenses. He wants the war to end. Are his acts of sabotage politically motivated or a desperate attempt at peace?

In peace, she fell apart.
A year later, Vera is back with her oppressive family, living under her real name, and Nick is on trial for murder. Trapped in grief and guilt, she cannot speak about the past and does not believe in the future. With Nick refusing to defend himself, she ventures to London to understand why he is so willing to embrace the hangman’s noose. Who is he trying to protect? What secrets does he plan to carry to his grave? And why does Nick insist upon hiding her true identity? To save the man she loves, Vera must tear open the past and confront the tragic price for peace.

New Novella Publication Spotlight with an Author Q&A: Heart and the City by Cecilia Fyre

Heart and the City (Book 1 in the Love Medicine series
by
Cecilia Fyre

Q. We're currently in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. What five things are helping to improve your quality of life at this difficult time?

A. Subscriptions to both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Usually I only have one or the other.
  • A daily writing routine, which keeps me centred.
  • That I finally was able to by masks.
  • More Skype and other virtual meetings with friends and family.
  • Always having ice cream in the freezer! Ok that’s a lie. I have ice cream regardless of Covid-19…
Q. Do you have pets, if so, what?

A. No pets right now, sadly. I would love to have a dachshund though. I’ve always loved them, and I follow lots of dachshund accounts on Instagram. We used to have rats, and I loved those a lot. But they die so quickly, and that is really sad!

Q. Who in the writing world is your greatest influence?

A. Definitely the ladies from the RNA, the UK’s Romantic Novelist Association. Barbara Cartland was once president, and they have an amazing conference each year. I’m going to miss going to that this July (it was cancelled because of Covid-19).

Q. Describe your perfect day?

A. I am torn on this one. It’s either a day on which I write 10,000 words, or a day where I just laze around, reading and eating chocolate.

Q. What project are you working on now?

A. On this pen name, I’m currently focussing on getting out the novellas. I’m not sure what I’ll do next with it.

British doctor Lea Holm has come to New York to work in her chosen field of emergency medicine. She loves her new life in this exciting city and can’t wait to get started with her research project. The last thing she needs are distractions.
But then she meets famous actor Ricco Como in her building – a distraction if ever there was one. He’s gorgeous and sweet, and there’s an immediate connection between them. Lea tries to resist temptation, but when he comes to her for help dealing with his steadily worsening migraine she can’t turn away from his plight.
As Ricco’s health takes a turn for the worse, their lives become more and more entwined. But can their growing attraction withstand the strain of his ill health, and can he let Lea be more than just his doctor?
**This novella series contains detailed descriptions of long-term health conditions, cheating and a bereavement.**

The series is set in New York City and was written before COVID-19. It makes no reference to recent events.

Cecilia Fyre is the pen name of a romance author trying out something new.

She likes sunny, crisp autumn days. Cups of hot cocoa with little marshmallows floating on top. The roaring of the sea. Laughing until your face hurts. The silence when you curl up with a good book.

Her stories are about people. Some of them are strange, some think they're boring. They all have secrets, they're all scared sometimes. Cecilia writes about life, about love. About how hard it is to do it right. Usually, there's a happy ending, or at least there might be one, someday.

But life's not all sunshine and roses, and that's why Cecilia tells her stories.

In the real world, Cecilia lives in England.
