Christmas
in September! Christmas at the Lock Keeper's Cottage in my first
festive novel of 2020. It's time to find a cosy spot to read and
indulge in a favourite drink while enjoying Lucy Coleman's latest
tale.
All
Imogen "Immi" Tolliman wants for Christmas is to be with
the man she loves but will circumstances overrule what her heart
desires?
A
long-distance relationship where love conquerors all… eventually.
This gentle narrative meanders along as we get to know Immi and the
people she identifies as her "family".
Ms
Coleman has written a heartfelt story about daily life and struggles
within a
beautiful rural setting. There's a strong sense of community within
Ayesbury. It's a place where life-long connections are made
regardless of background. It's a close-knit group of people, watching
out for each other, just like relatives do within a large family
unit.
Festivities
and celebrations bring everyone together and the adorable Santa Ahoy
Christmas Cruises are a lovely example of getting into the spirit of
things whether you're young or old. It's also a time to make plans
for the future and to work and assist those who need it the most. The
author's written relatable and likeable characters just like we are;
working hard to do our best for those we love.
Overall,
the ending is satisfying in that Immi and Gray are together, however,
some loose ends leave me wondering if Ms Coleman plans to update us
on life in Ayesbury in the future… fingers crossed, it's a
yes?

New Release Spotlight & Review: Magic Under The Mistletoe by Lucy Coleman
It's December 23rd and while everyone else is rushing home for the holidays, workaholic Leesa Oliver is dreading switching on her out-of-office for the festive season. And it seems her equally driven boss, Cary Anderson, isn't relishing spending Christmas at his family's country estate either.
So together, they draft an unexpected Christmas contract: They'll spend half of the holidays with each other's families, pretending to be a couple. Leesa knows the insufferably good-looking Cary will make her Christmas more bearable, but what happens after the last of the mince pies have been eaten...?
Leesa signed off on a sensible business agreement, but somewhere, amongst the fairy lights and carols something seems to have changed... It seems there might just be some magic under the mistletoe this Christmas!
Two
career-driven people burdened by familial expectations at the most
wonderful time of the year!!
Leesa Oliver and Cary Anderson are work colleagues, expected to spend the Christmas festivities with their families after returning to the UK from a hectic business trip in Australia. Both are lacking the seasonal spirit and bad weather on arrival at Cardiff Airport means plans must be changed. Leesa reluctantly accepts Cary's offer of help only for it to lead to a misunderstanding. Therefore they decide to split time between both families pretending to be a couple because of the potential impact it will have. Theoretically, it's the perfect plan but as the pair spend more time in each others company, it becomes clear the lines between them are becoming more and more blurred.
I really enjoyed this novel simply because it isn't overly packed with Christmassy sentiment as the time-line extends a full year. The author provides us with plenty of visual descriptions of the glamorous backdrop to feel it's a special time of the year when the story begins. Yet, there's an undercurrent mood reflected in the protagonists and their attitudes that projects feelings aren't as they seem. The narrative is realistic and believable. It's a wonderful portrayal of how seasonal holidays provoke mixed reactions for many. Ms Coleman captures this and it contrasts well with the snowy scenes we love to read about in festive novels.
I've always liked the fake relationship trope and the fact the protagonists work closely together makes it all the more satisfying when they allow their heads to follow their hearts.
"We've both discovered that all you need to do is listen to your heart…"
This novel has so much to offer and the supporting characters add some thought-provoking plot lines. Therefore, it triggers plenty of mixed emotions but most importantly, love is always there in some form or another.
Well balanced and written to keep a reader invested in all aspects of the story, It's a book that will work well at any time of the year for a reader. This is my second Lucy Coleman novel and I'm looking forward to reading many more.

Competition Time and Price Reduction: Summer on the Italian Lakes by Lucy Coleman
The fun part about being an author is that you get to spend your days in some wonderful locations, even if it’s virtually! But the only way to be able to sit down and really share with the readers what the experience is like, is to visit in person.
Lake Garda is a place I have visited several times over the years, and it will always be one of my all-time favourite holiday destinations. Whether you fly direct or are planning a grand European tour by road – it is a dream destination.
The villa featured in Summer on the Italian Lakes is fictitious but based on a composite of two properties in which I have stayed. But the descriptions of being up in the hills and the trips taken are real-life experiences.
Italy is an overload of stimuli – everywhere you look, every breath you take in, and everything you touch, fills your heart with love for the vibrancy and warmth of this beautiful country. It’s full of passionate people – for love and life. Fiery temperaments, fabulous food and wonderful wines; flavours that literally grab you with their freshness and taste. Wonderful music and art; scenery that will make your jaw drop; beautiful architecture around which to saunter and so many hidden gems to discover.
But up in the hills where it’s quieter, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with the inner you. For me a holiday has to combine everything – lots of exciting things to experience, but also some time to relax and chill.
So, it was the perfect setting for this book and the only sadness for me, was that I didn’t get to do a research trip! I didn’t need to as all of those memories are locked inside my head, and my heart – but, oh, Italy is calling me loud and clear! If you haven’t been, please do add it to your list of must-sees and Lake Garda is the perfect place to begin.

So the opportunity to spend the summer teaching at a writer's retreat in an idyllic villa on the shores of Lake Garda - owned by superstar author Arran Jamieson - could this be just the thing to fire up Brie's writing - and romantic - mojo?
Brie's sun-drenched Italian summer could be the beginning of this writer's very own happy-ever-after...
Escape the January blues with this sun-drenched, heart-warming story from the bestselling author of Snowflakes Over Holly Cove.
Brianna
Middleton is a successful writer but struggling to find her mojo to
finish her current work-in-progress. She's also single and lacking
confidence after her previous relationship severely dented her
confidence. When her agent asks her to stand in for another writer on
a four-week assignment in Italy to assist on a writing retreat, she's
sceptical but accepts the challenge. Her first impressions of her
host are strained, but with a stunning backdrop against Lake Garda,
the trip not only triggers her creativity but opens her mind and
heart to find love.
Although the main focus is on Brie and Arran, I devoured all the information surrounding the writing retreat classes. If you, like me have sat down to write, you'll love all the details about the writing process the author poured into this part of the narrative. It's unexpected, yet played a huge part in my overall enjoyment along with the antics of the protagonists and their guests.
I enjoyed how Brie took stock of her life and let go of her inhibitions to explore the opportunities presented to her, including Arran. As the hero, I always appreciate getting to know ones perceived as difficult, until we learn more about them. It's exciting when the attraction becomes more than a furtive glance and a slight touch. Complimenting the tentative relationship is the stunning Italian Lakes backdrop and the tantalising descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of the area.
Around the 75-80% mark, the narrative dragged on and ran out of steam. Until this point, I adored the time the protagonists were in Italy and remained invested in them after the plot shifted back to the UK. However, the additional plot-lines concentrating on secondary characters took away the focus from Brie and Arran in what I can only think is a way of building interest for a future novel? If this is the case, it didn't work for me as I didn't connect sufficiently to those characters and it cast a shadow over what had been until that point a fabulous read.
Overall, many high points make this a lovely, fascinating romance; two very different authors finding a common ground between them, the inclusion of the writing retreat class information and lastly, Lake Garda's beauty and culture. This combination works perfectly and anything else for me was surplus to requirement.
