Read an Extract: Angel Of The Lost Treasure by Marie Laval

The scene I chose takes place in a village inn where Marie-Ange and Saintclair have stopped for the night on their way to the chateau of Beauregard, where Marie-Ange hopes to receive an inheritance from a relative. Sparks have been flying between Marie-Ange and fiery-tempered Hugo Saintclair ever since they first met, and if they come from very different backgrounds, the young woman can’t deny that she is attracted to him...

***

Good morning, Madame,’ he said, his eyes skimming over her body. A slow, seductive smile appeared on his lips. ‘There is nothing like a beautiful woman in her nightshirt before breakfast to put me in a good mood.’

He stood up and towered over her. The room was suddenly very small.

G-g-good morning,’ she stammered, crossing her arms over her chest. She couldn’t get Christopher’s dressing gown to cover herself with because Saintclair stood between her and the bed. The fireplace behind her didn’t allow the possibility of stepping back either.

Saintclair lifted a hand and gently brushed a curl off her forehead. Her breath caught in her throat. His touch burned her skin and sent shivers through her at the same time.

Whatever are you doing, Capitaine? You forget your place,’ she snapped, shocked by his gesture but more so by the way her body had responded.

And where would that be, Madame Norton? Of course, I forgot. The stables,’ he said, shooting an amused glance at her before turning away. ‘Don’t worry, I’m going,’ he added before she could answer. He rubbed his chin. ‘I need a wash and a shave. I’ll ask the landlord to have a pail of hot water brought up to you at once.’

Grabbing his boots in one hand, he unbarred the door and went out.

She stood for a moment in the middle of the room, annoyed with the man and at her reaction to him. Around him she sounded snooty and disagreeable, when she had never paid much attention to the issues of class or status. Heavens, how could she ever think she was superior to him, or to anyone else, just because her mother was a Beauregard and her husband a member of the English gentry? She lived in a run-down manor house and the only reason she was travelling across France was to collect an inheritance to enable her to fix a leaky roof.

She didn’t feel superior to Saintclair at all, but it was true she didn’t like him and despised his manners. However she would have to put up with him until they reached Beauregard. After that, she did not plan to ever lay eyes on the man again.

Angel Of The Lost Treasure

An ancient secret hidden within a mother’s song ...

When young widow, Marie-Ange Norton is invited to Beauregard in France by the mysterious Monsieur Malleval to collect an inheritance, she has no choice but to accept.

But when she embarks on the voyage with her fiery-tempered travelling companion Capitaine Hugo Saintclair, little does she know what waits for her across the sea in turbulent nineteenth-century France on the eve of Napoleon’s return from exile. When she arrives, she is taken aback by Malleval’s fascination with her family – seemingly inspired by his belief they are connected to a sacred relic he’s read about in coded manuscripts by the Knights Templar.

As it becomes clear that Malleval’s obsession has driven him to madness, Marie-Ange is horrified to realise she is more the man’s prisoner than his guest. Not only that, but Hugo is the only person who might be able to help her, and he could represent a different kind of danger .

Publication Day Spotlight: Happy Dreams At Mermaid Cove by Marie Laval

Happy Dreams At Mermaid Cove

From the big city to a little yellow mobile library on the Isle of Skye ...

When Jenna Palmer agrees to the new position of mobile librarian on the tiny Arrandale peninsular of the Isle of Skye, she knows she’s signing up for difficult working conditions and mediocre wages. But Jenna needs to get away, and a little yellow mobile library called Buttercup could be her escape to happier dreams ...

However, whilst Jenna can get to grips with foggy island roads, local mermaid legends and even big purple monsters, she never expected to have to contend with a boss as grumpy as Daniel McGregor, or a young book lover as enthusiastic as his niece, Katrina.

Arrandale might represent Jenna’s safe port in a storm, but could she and Buttercup also become a beacon of hope to Daniel, Katrina and the entire island community?

Spotlight & Review: Little Pink Taxi by Marie Laval

Little Pink Taxi by Marie Laval

Rosalie Heart is a well-known face in Irlwick – well, if you drive a bright pink taxi and your signature style is a pink anorak, you’re going to draw a bit of attention! But Rosalie’s company Love Taxis is more than just a gimmick – for many people in the remote Scottish village, it’s a lifeline.
Which is something that Marc Petersen will never understand. Marc’s ruthless approach to business doesn’t extend to pink taxi companies running at a loss. When he arrives in Irlwick to see to a new acquisition – Raventhorn, a rundown castle – it’s apparent he poses a threat to Rosalie’s entire existence; not just her business, but her childhood home too.
On the face of it Marc and Rosalie should loathe each other, but what they didn’t count on was somebody playing cupid …

While the adorable cover and title give an obvious clue about what to expect within the narrative, I discovered Little Pink Taxi goes above and beyond what I expected within the pages.

The gentleman Rosalie Heart collects from the airport to drive to Raventhorn is a mystery. He's tall with a French accent and has come to visit Geoff who unfortunately isn't available to greet his guest. It doesn't take long to discover Marc Petersen now owns the only real home she's ever had, along with the taxi company she established and runs. With a threat of not only losing her home but her job, she's not happy to be playing host to the new owner. However, he soon becomes her protector as someone from the past comes back to settle a score and a mystery needs solving too.

Visiting to assess the run-down estate his father bought before his tragic death, Marc Petersen hopes his trip to Irlwick in the frozen North of Scotland is quick and uneventful. Only, as soon as he arrives, his plans have already gone to pot. Collected from the airport by a pretty, chatty young woman who is not only wearing pink but driving a pink coloured taxi, it's the beginning of what turns out to be a life-changing trip full of discovery.

I enjoyed the contrast between Rosalie's effervescent personality and Marc's resolute one. They appear as opposites but as events and presumptions from the past come to the surface, they find a common bond, mutual respect and love. The backdrop is the snowy Highlands with a warm community spirit supplied by an eclectic bunch of small-town folk. They provide a light-hearted contrast to the bumpy road the protagonists' developing relationship travels along.

Ms Laval has written a captivating and engaging novel full of humour. The narrative layered with light-hearted banter between the characters, the depiction of The Highlands, the local "crimes", and the folklore surrounding Raventhorn. The highlight and what I enjoyed the most was the mystery element and how the history of Raventhorn and Marc's Danish heritage are connected. I appreciated this even more because I'm familiar with the area and could easily relate them to descriptions of the places mentioned in Denmark.

To sum up, an entertaining novel laced with a hidden charm and an intriguing plot. A fabulous read for any time of the year.
