Release Day Review: See Her Die by Melinda Leigh
See Her Die by Melinda Leigh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
See Her Die is book two in the Bree Taggart series. The narrative picks up where we left off in book one; Cross Her Heart. However, you can read this book as a standalone novel although I do recommend starting the series from the beginning.
Juggling life as the new sheriff and taking care of her niece and nephew along with her friend, Dana, Bree is struggling to find a work-life balance. The case she is working on is demanding and her deputies are not very co-operative.
Matt agrees to accept Bree's offer of working as a consultant, It's not full-time work but it acknowledges his expertise. It's an unexpected opportunity to work as an investigator again, although someone isn't too happy to have him around. The new arrangement means he can continue work with his K-9.
The primary focus between Bree and Matt is their working relationship, but it becomes clearer, the pair are developing feelings for each other. The subtlety of the connection means the case they are investigating isn't overshadowed. I expect that to change and am looking forward to seeing how the protagonists' attraction unfolds... two more books in the series are scheduled for release in 2021.
Overall, See Her Die is an engaging, suspenseful novel. If you're looking for an intense narrative with fascinating characters and intrigue, this is a book you need to read.

Release Day Review: If You Must Know by Jamie Beck
If
You Must Know, the first book in Jamie Beck's new Potomac Point
series.
Amanda
and Erin; Two sisters living contrasting lives, their only common
link is their bloodline. As different as chalk and cheese, Amanda's
shocked when her perfect life's destroyed by deceit, while Erin lives
a carefree life. That's until their father dies and some painful
realities are exposed.
One
aspect of Ms Beck's writing I admire is her consistent writing skill.
After enjoying other novels by her, I know I'm going to be reading a
well-written book when I pick one of her titles. Therefore, when the
narrative didn't resonate with it caught me unaware. I ignored the
temptation to give up after a couple of chapters simply because of
the slow pace defused my enthusiasm. Besides, I don't like throwing
in the towel when I'm scheduled to write a review. So I plodded on…
and I'm glad I did because, whilst the beginning is slow, the reward
for my patience is when the pace picks up and elements I associate
with Ms Beck's writing begin to shine through.
The
characterisation is spot-on as the dynamics between these two
sister's unfolds. Absorbed within the storyline, the narrative had
its moments, but equally, sections failed to keep my attention. I'm a
mood reader and it's possible it affected my overall enjoyment of
this book…"It's me, not the book". If at a later date I
re-read this novel, I'll amend this review accordingly.
The
author's shift away from romance to women's fiction is a surprise and
a fact I wasn't unaware of before I began reading this novel. Yet, I
applaud her for the change of direction she's taking with her work.
Consequently, I'll still read future books in this series and by the
author generally.

Life
turns upside down for two sisters in Wall
Street Journal bestselling
author Jamie Beck’s emotional novel about how secrets and
differences can break—or bind—a family.
Sisters
Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the
childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that
her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules—at the school
where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter,
wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart—in love and
otherwise—living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and
honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her
fledgling bath-products business.
The
sisters are content leading separate but happy lives in their
hometown of Potomac Point until everything is upended by lies that
force them to confront unsettling truths about their family,
themselves, and each other. For sisters as different as these two,
building trust doesn’t come easily—especially with one secret
still between them—but it may be the only way to save their family.

Release Day Spotlight: Cross Her Heart by Melinda Leigh
Cross Her Heart by Melinda Leigh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I've been reading more thriller and crime novels recently but with Cross Her Heart, I've surprisingly come back to my favourite genre; Romantic Suspense and new to me author Melinda Leigh.
After overcoming the tragedy during her childhood, homicide detective Bree Taggart's life is again turned upside down after her sister Erin's murder. The circumstances surrounding the death mirror those of the nightmare she lived through as a child. With her brother-in-law Justin, the prime suspect missing, Bree's determined to track him down to seek justice for her sister. When Justin's best friend turns up looking for him, he's convinced he is innocent. So as an ex-sheriff's investigator and K9 handler, he joins forces with Bree to find him…
When Matt Flynn learns about the murder of his best friend Justin's wife, he doesn't believe he's guilty even though the victim's sister believes he is. As both he and Bree Taggart are looking for the same man, they agree to join forces. Neither agrees the local sheriff's department will conduct a fair investigation, so will they be able to prove Justin is innocent or is he the murderer?
Both the protagonists have haunting backgrounds, a common link that binds them in the same way their law enforcement training does. I like the dynamic of them both operating "under the radar" and the mutual respect and trust they gain with each other. This creates a firm foundation to further develop their relationship as the series progresses. Unfamiliar with the writing style, I quickly found myself fully immersed within this fast-paced and exciting narrative. There's a perfect balance between action and emotions as the plot unfolds leaving a satisfying conclusion to the case and a glimpse of where the series is heading.
One surprise is the lack of romance within the narrative, but subtle hints suggest the protagonists "like" each other. It's a start of what I hope is a slow-burn relationship and will, therefore, be eagerly awaiting future Bree Taggart instalments.

Release Day Review: Yours in Scandal by Lauren Layne
Citizen magazine's New York's "Man of the Year" regarded as a perfect springboard to launch Mayor Robert Davenport's candidacy for the gubernatorial election; at least his campaign manager thinks so. With the welcome publicity, it's also an ideal opportunity to upgrade his marital status from single to at least dating. Not surprisingly, the shrewd campaigner knows of the right woman for him. Due to her connection, she's also a useful way to gain dirt on his opponent. Robert isn't keen on the idea but agrees anyway, however, when he meets Adeline Blake, it ignites a long-dormant spark of attraction detrimental to his career!
NY Governor's daughter, party-girl Addie Brennan mysteriously disappeared some years ago. Now unbeknown to only a couple of friends, she's back and living as Adeline Blake right under her father's nose. She's forging a career as an event planner, rebuilding her life in the city she escaped. When get she gets a call from the mayor's office for an event consultation, she sceptical about why they would ask her company to organise an event. However, it's a business opportunity with a high profile client she can't pass up. On meeting the client hosting the leaving party she quickly realises professional and personal boundaries risk becoming blurred as she gets to know mayor Robert Davenport.
The author's signature New York backdrop is familiar but the protagonists feel more relatable in this first book of the Man Of The Year series. Robert is wealthy but grounded. Portrayed as a politician with a social conscience, he's someone who plays fair with honesty and integrity. Addie/Adeline is a woman trying to define herself in a world where she's been misunderstood. Her family background and upbringing connect her with Robert Davenport, as does their loss of a parent. The default status of their relationship starts as 'It's complicated' but thanks to their mutual trust and faith in each other to do the right thing, they eventually find their happy ending… together.
Ms Layne has ramped up the heat in this sexy romantic comedy. The background is the world of politics but thankfully, there's not a policy or political thought insight. Well paced, laced with humour and witty dialogue it's a perfect novel to distract you from real-life drama. Yours in Scandal sets the scene for a promising new series, a perfect read for fans like myself. For those who haven't picked up a novel by this author, Robert and Addie's story is a good place to start.

Release Day Spotlight: Regretting You by Colleen Hoover
Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.
With warring personalities and conflicting goals, Morgan and Clara find it increasingly difficult to coexist. The only person who can bring peace to the household is Chris—Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family anchor. But that peace is shattered when Chris is involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The heartbreaking and long-lasting consequences will reach far beyond just Morgan and Clara.
While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to, and Clara turns to the one boy she’s been forbidden to see. With each passing day, new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings make mother and daughter fall further apart. So far apart, it might be impossible for them to ever fall back together.
Coho loves to surprise her readers and this novel falls into this category. The twists and turns were a mix of unexpected and anticipated making the narrative fascinating. Morgan doesn't want her daughter to end up how she did at the same age. Clara has her own views on what she wants to do with her life, therefore it's an explosive scenario waiting to blow up in their faces. Only the fallout has a much wider impact as lies and deception are revealed.
While the plot threads kept me entertained and interested, the dialogue let the side down for me. There's only so much teenage petulance I could stand and Clara's behaviour became rather boring in a repetitive way. Her immaturity shines through unlike Miller, who is more grounded for his age.
For me, the outstanding characters are the male supporting ones rather than the female protagonists. Miller is mature far beyond his years and Jonah is a caring, compassionate man. I liked how they both manage to defuse volatile situations because of their ability to see issues from many angles, unlike the females. As mother and daughter, Morgan and Clara are poor communicators especially between themselves so it's not surprising the pair clash. Thankfully, there comes a time when the dust has settled and everyone moves forward with more insight and understanding.
I've always found the author's sense of humour rather strange so the final chapter and ending made my eyes roll. If it's supposed to be funny, it sadly missed the mark with me. However, one or two incidents within the novel which did make me laugh, lifting the overall atmosphere.
Overall, a soundly written and solid novel. Those familiar with Ms Hoover's book will love Regretting You however, it failed to hit the spot for me.
