Review: Broken Promise by Tara Thomas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The wait is finally over as the identity of The Gentleman is revealed. I had a hunch about who he was but I'm not too proud to say my presumptive suspicion was way off.

Alyssa Adams became a police officer in the hope she could solve the crime leading to her own sister's death. During her investigations, she constantly crosses paths with the Benedict family and the oldest brother, who she once arrested is becoming more of a distraction as they both become targets of The Gentleman.

Kipling Benedict, the eldest brother with a womanising reputation like his father's. His brothers may have found their true loves, but after a humiliating break-up with a woman he loved, he has sworn off women until officer Adams catches his eye. After a family secret unfolds which connects the two, they work alongside each other as professional lines become blurred.

As I dived into Broken Promise, what surprised me the most was how the author tied up all the loose ends as the crimes in Savannah are solved. The high points in the narrative are the flashbacks giving us information about the motivation fuelling The Gentleman's crimes. These fit perfectly with the clues already identified. The romance between the protagonists is sexy and I enjoyed catching up with the other Benedict men and their women and happy the whole family are reunited with their sister. As in the earlier instalments, both have heart-warming and heartbreaking moments and a satisfying Happy Ever After.

Overall, an enjoyable romantic suspense trilogy. I read the three prequel novellas before starting this series and although it's not necessary to read them before this series, I feel they enhance the series.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? This book blog meme has had a few hosts in its past but is now in the capable hands of Kathryn at The Book Date. It's a place where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It's a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and to put new titles on your reading list.

Life right now!

This is the first morning I haven't coughed or had to blow my nose for weeks. My son had a relapse but is getting better and is back at school. The warm temperatures these past few days has accelerated the snow melting, the crocuses are finished and the daffodils should be in flower within the coming days. Reading wise, I'm still only managing two books a week and my writing has taken a backseat too as I've begun to catch up with everything that has been neglected around the house these past weeks whilst we've all been ill. Now that Winter feels truly behind us, I'm beginning to feel more energised, so I should become more productive...I hope ;-)

Lennon Reborn by Scarlett Cole

Lennon McCartney is not a broken man. Because being broken implies being whole once. When a horrific accident deprives him of the one thing he loves—his talent as a fierce and explosive drummer—Lennon is left with a life chained by an abusive mother, by crushing guilt over a tragic past. A life he doesn’t want.

Dr. Georgia Starr is a legend. She’s one of the most successful neurosurgeons in the world, coming from a long-line of respected New York doctors. Her life is built around solving complex medical cases in order to bring relief and hope to sick children. But the one problem she can’t solve is how to live her life. How to be shake loose the burden of being her elitist, arrogant father’s daughter. How to be free.

Can a man who despises his life and a woman who desperately needs to live find the answers, and love, with each other?

Thoughts so far...

This is book four in the Preload series and although I've only read one previous novel in the series, Lennon is definitely the character who stands out and I've been anticipating his story ever since. So far (at 40% on Kindle), the book is exceeding my expectations. Whilst Lennon is a complex character, Dr. Georgia Starr is an interesting match for him. The plot is flowing effortlessly and I can't wait to continue reading it. It's definitely a great reading start to my week.

Deadly Summer by Denise Grover Swank

(from Goodreads) Ten years ago, Summer Butler was television’s most popular teenage sleuth. Since then, she’s hit—what gossip sites just loveto call—the gutter. Nearly bankrupt, betrayed, estranged from her greedy mother, and just about unemployable, she’s coaxed into that desperate haven for has-beens: reality TV.

Winging it as a faux PI, she’ll solve off-the-cuff mysteries in her hometown of Sweet Briar, Alabama. For added drama, there’s police chief Luke Montgomery, inconveniently Summer’s first and only love.

It’s when Summer stumbles upon a very real corpse that Darling Investigations takes an unexpected twist. The growing list of suspects is a big draw to viewers, but the reality is that Summer doesn’t know whom she can trust. Someone has written this killer new scene especially for her, and unless Summer gives the role everything she’s got, it could be her last…

Life right now!

The snow is melting and it's starting to feel slightly like Spring! Crocuses are already in flower even though 90% of the garden is still covered in snow. The daffodils are beginning to grow too. On that positive note, everyone in this household including me needs to get fit and well again. Over Easter, we all had flu and no sooner had we begun to recover, we got colds. We're all fed up! We thought after having a relatively sickness free Winter, we could forget about seasonal illnesses. The unseasonably cold weather snap in March brought unwelcome coughs and fevers. Life can only improve from now onwards can't it?

Thoughts so far...

This is the third and final book in the series and the one where the villain is discovered. Not surprisingly, I moved this book up to the top of my reading list as soon as I downloaded it. I've managed to get to 22% on my Kindle and loving it so far. The protagonists are familiar and already known to me as they were secondary characters in earlier instalments. Therefore I'm enjoying getting reconnected to the whole cast again as they work towards solving the crimes. Before beginning this book, I've always had a pretty clear view on who I think the bad guy is...in this case, discovering the identity of The Gentleman. However, I'm beginning to rethink my choice and I can't wait to plough through the remaining pages to find the answer.

Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian
The one you love…
Robert Selby is determined to see his sister make an advantageous match. But he has two problems: the Selbys have no connections or money and Robert is really a housemaid named Charity Church. She’s enjoyed every minute of her masquerade over the past six years, but she knows her pretense is nearing an end. Charity needs to see her beloved friend married well and then Robert Selby will disappear…forever.
May not be who you think…
Alistair, Marquess of Pembroke, has spent years repairing the estate ruined by his wastrel father, and nothing is more important than protecting his fortune and name. He shouldn’t be so beguiled by the charming young man who shows up on his doorstep asking for favors. And he certainly shouldn’t be thinking of all the disreputable things he’d like to do to the impertinent scamp.
But is who you need…
When Charity’s true nature is revealed, Alistair knows he can’t marry a scandalous woman in breeches, and Charity isn’t about to lace herself into a corset and play a respectable miss. Can these stubborn souls learn to sacrifice what they’ve always wanted for a love that is more than they could have imagined?

Review: Deadly Secret by Tara Thomas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I can't wait for the finale!

The Sons of Broad series keeps getting better and better as Bea Jacobs and Knox Benedict become the next ones to become embroiled in the mystery surrounding the Gentleman.

Unbeknown to everyone, Bea and Knox are secretly married. Knox is the upstanding brother of the Benedict family and this information alone is out of character for him. However, as deadly details unfold the pair are also pulled into the tangled web of deceit and murder.

Although I'd already worked out the discovery revealed at the end of this novel, it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the narrative so far. Ms Thomas has done a wonderful job of incorporating all the characters we've met previously, keeping them relevant as uncovered clues begin to fit together like a jigsaw. All the while retaining the focus on protagonist couple.

I love how the story draws you in as each new clue and twist presents itself. Some of the information is predictable, however, it doesn't lessen the overall appeal and kept me engaged and guessing the whole time. I love it when the narrative actively enticed me into trying to solve the clues while I wonder if I'm on the same train of thought as the author...or not!

Not surprisingly, I can't wait for the final conclusive instalment of this compelling series featuring Kipling and Alyssa and tentatively wonder if I've correctly guessed the identity of the Gentleman.

Two scantily clad women strutted out onto the stage.
Keaton was too far away to see details. All he could make out were tiny bikini tops and even tinier thongs. Blondes. And pretty enough to make any red-blooded man fantasize about ripping the scraps of fabric off them. A movement to the side of the stage caught his eye. A server. He only saw her profile, but there was something about her.
He slid off the barstool to get a closer look.
“Hey, man,” Michael called after him. “Where are you going?”
Keaton didn’t reply.
“Where’s Benedict going?” he heard someone ask. “He’s interested in a dancer? Here?” someone else asked.
Keaton shook his head; it wasn’t a dancer that captured his attention. He wasn’t a stranger to the numerous clubs around the city that catered to wealthy men and their carnal needs. However, he’d never singled out any particular woman while at one. After all, he’d al- ways said, one half-naked woman was just as good as another. As made evident by the number of times his picture was in the society pages, but never with the same woman twice.
And yet, here he was, eyes fixed on the petite waitress at the side of the stage, currently trying to blend into the background and not take away from the duo on the stage. It was a horrible failure. He wasn’t sure why the management even felt the need to put anyone onstage with her working here. How could anyone look at those two with her in the room?
She moved with a grace that made the two blondes look like ducks swimming alongside a swan. She stretched out her hand to pass a glass to a man sitting on the far inside of a booth. Everyone in her vicinity turned to watch her lithe body.
“Drooling over a topless dancer?” Michael asked, coming up behind him. “I have to say, I’m a bit surprised. They look a bit rough.”
“Not a dancer,” Keaton let slip before he could stop himself.
Michael moved to stand beside him and followed his line of sight. His low whistle signaled he saw the woman in question. “Hot damn. Wait until a certain blonde hears about this. I’m sure Miss Elise Germain will love the fact that her intended is drooling over a half-naked barmaid.”
“Shut the fuck up.” Keaton didn’t shift his attention from the goddess taking drink orders. “I’m not engaged.” “Please,” Michael’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “You two have been promised to each since you were what? Fifteen?”
Keaton mumbled a curse under his breath, but right now, he couldn’t focus on anything other than the serving siren. It sounded so crazy, he couldn’t even verbalize it, but he thought he knew her from somewhere. Some- thing about the way she moved called to him. Pulled him forward for a better look.
He took another step toward her.
She was magnificent. And the way she moved continued to captivate the audience near her. Keaton’s eyes traveled over her body, taking in as many details as possible: her light brown skin, the curve of her hips, and the slope of her breasts covered by a tight cropped shirt. He knew they would be oh-so-soft to touch. His eyes drifted higher at the same time she turned her head his way and he froze.
Tilly.
He couldn’t breathe. It couldn’t be.
What was she doing in Charleston? The last he’d heard, her family had moved to Texas. Granted, they’d both been fourteen at the time, but he’d never forgot- ten the day he’d got home from school, walked into the eerily quiet kitchen, and discovered his life had changed forever.
Tilly always came over to his house after school to help him with his homework. Usually her mother would come over with her and gossip with his mom. But there was nothing that day. He’d looked out the back door to get a peek of their house and gasped. There were men all over the yard, carrying furniture.
He’d run back inside and up the stairs to his mother’s room and, with a stomach filled with dread, asked where Mama Ann and Tilly were. His mother arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow. She didn’t like that her children called their neighbor Mama Ann, but every- one called her that. It was just her personality. She was so kind and loving, the name came naturally.
“They’re moving to Texas,” she said, and his world shifted out of focus.
“Why?” he managed to croak out. Texas was so far away. It made no sense why they would move away from their family like that and so suddenly.
“It’s been discovered that Mr. Brock has been embezzling money from your father.”
“What?” He couldn’t believe it. Not Tilly’s dad. He was stealing from them? Something didn’t sound right. His mother gave him a sad smile. “I’m afraid he was caught red-handed. The Brock family’s basically ruined now. Best they move and try to start over.”
His parents had always joked that he and Tilly would get married one day. Everyone talked about it and he didn’t even care because Tilly was smart and pretty. The week before, he’d kissed her for the first time. Her lips had been soft and sweet, and he’d looked forward to kissing them over and over. How could he kiss her if she were in Texas?
“Your father’s going to promote Howard Germain.
Isn’t his daughter in your class, too?”
Elise. Tilly’s best friend. Or was. He felt sick. He mumbled a half-intelligible answer to his mom and ran down the stairs to the living room. He had to call Tilly. Had to talk to her, even if it was only to say good-bye. But their phone had already been disconnected and when he went to their house, the men moving all the furniture told him they’d already left.
Tilly Brock put on her best plastic smile and muttered a soft, “Excuse me, please,” to the man blocking her path to her customer. She recognized the move for what it was: an attempt to make her reach across him. Two more months. Two more months. She grit her teeth and made sure the men saw just enough of her cleavage as she handed the drink to the waiting customer.
“Thank you, darling,” he said, eyes firmly planted on her chest, never once looking her in the eyes. “Why ain’t someone as pretty as you up onstage?”
Like she didn’t hear that ten times a night. Her mother might not roll over in her grave at the thought of her daughter serving drinks at a gentlemen’s club, but Tilly knew she’d come back from the dead for the sole purpose of telling her how disappointed she was if she even thought about dancing topless.
“Two left feet,” she told the guy instead.
“Trust me.” His laugh gave her chills. “It ain’t your feet we’re interested in.”
Two more months. I can do two more months.
Onstage, the dance was almost over. One of the blond twins glared at her and in doing so, tripped and almost fell. Several men booed. The other twin shot her a look that told Tilly they were blaming everything on her. Oh well, what else was new. It wasn’t a day that ended in “y” if she didn’t piss off the Wonder Twins.
She gathered several empty glasses and nodded as a few drink orders were given. Her tray was heavy, but she thought she could make it back to the bar. She turned that way and suddenly felt someone’s eyes drilling holes into her from the back of the room. Out of habit, she lifted her head to try and find who was watching her so intensely.
She scanned the crowd, but no one looked out of place. Then she saw him, standing slightly off to the side, watching her with an easy confidence, but with a tilt of his head that somehow seemed familiar. He recognized her at the same instant she recognized him.
Keaton Benedict.
Her tray and glasses fell to the floor.

After reading the trilogy of prequel novellas for this new Sons of Broad series, with the scene set, I couldn't wait to jump head first into this first full-length novel. It isn't essential to read the three novellas before beginning Darkest Night so if you begin with this book, you won't be missing any vital information.

After her family lost everything after a scandal, Tilly Brock can't wait until she finished her degree because it meant she wouldn't have to work at the Charleston's upscale gentleman's club to fund her way through college. She's no longer part of Charleston's elite and Keaton Benedict's life so her focus is to finish her studies and become a teacher.

To outsiders, Keaton Benedict has it all. As the youngest of three brothers, he's expected to follow his older siblings and take on an active role within Benedict Industries, the legacy of their late father. Only despite his vast wealth, his heart longs to belongs to the young woman who disappeared from his life.

The intrigue continues as the Benedict family and Tilly are unexpectedly reunited as they're targeted by The Gentleman. Information from the past and new clues are uncovered, raising questions about Tilly's late father's connection to the scandal that ruined the family financially. The former young loves reconnect and discover their mutual feelings for each other are even stronger than before as potential danger is always in the background.

The narrative kept me engaged the whole time as we get snippets of insight into the Gentleman's world, as we watch Keaton and Tilly's romance develop whilst Charleston PD officer Alyssa Adams continues with her investigation into the abducted women and their murders as well as attention from Kipling Benedict. I wasn't familiar with this writer before this series, but I'm impressed with how effortlessly the narrative flows.

The ending for the protagonists is a satisfactory happy for now, as threads are left open to be continued in Deadly Secret #2 and Broken Promise #3… can't wait!

Review: Twisted End by Tara Thomas

Twisted End (Sons of Broad, #0.7)Twisted End by Tara Thomas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Janie and Brent's story concludes in this final thrilling prequel novella for the Sons Of Broad series.

Fast-paced, the loose ends from the previous novellas are tied up. Future protagonists are introduced, setting the scene for the remaining full-length novels in this series. So far, I'm totally hooked as I crave to know who the Gentleman is, securing my interest until the revealing of his identity. Numerous clues are revealed and as I've mentioned previously, I have a hunch who he may be...time will tell. Until then, I'll remain invested in the narrative and characters until the investigation into this enigmatic villain is solved.

If you love romantic suspense, I highly recommend this series by Tara Thomas. The intriguing narrative is a well-balanced mix of suspense and a sexy romance. I'm not usually a fan of novellas, but in this case, it worked for me, reading them back to back. The positive aspect of this style of introduction to a new series? Spreading much content to allow readers like me to absorb and understand who all the players are without feeling overwhelmed. I can't wait to dive into the next full-length instalment.

Release Day Review: Hidden Fate by Tara Thomas

Hidden Fate (Sons of Broad #0.6)Hidden Fate by Tara Thomas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Hidden Fate picks up where Shattered Fear left off as Janie Roberts life is threatened.

More groundwork is laid and evidence it exposed as Janie and Brent plan to leave Charleston for Washington DC.

Although this is the second prequel in this series, it is possible to start the series here, although as both are novellas, I recommend reading Shattered Fear first.

The pace maintains its fast speed and we begin to learn more about the Gentleman and the man working for him as they increase their intimidation towards Janie. As the intrigue increases, I can't wait to find out how this will all play out. I have my suspicions, but time will tell if I'm correct.

This is the author's first venture into romantic suspense and those that read erotic will be familiar with the name Tara Sue Me. I've never read any of her novels before but I'm hooked after reading this introduction to the new Sons Of Broad Series. Shattered Fear is a novella and a quick read, yet it kept me gripped the whole time and I can't wait for more. I'm not a fan of short stories, but this is a wonderful beginning to what promises to be a fabulous series.

Set in Charleston SC, we are introduced to the mysterious Gentleman, his identity hidden from the man he's blackmailing to conduct his wishes as payment for his gambling debts. Undercover cop Janie Roberts is working in the bar of a gentleman's club trying to collect leads and clues. Here, she meets Brent Taylor, the sexy playboy who fits the profile of the serial killer only she's falling for his charm…

This fast-paced teaser introduction was over far too soon but has left me craving for more.

If you enjoy romantic suspense, this series should be of interest to you.

I can't wait for...Darkest Night by Tara Thomas

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you're continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

I can't wait for…

SHE THOUGHT SHE’D LOST HIM FOREVER
Tilly Brock has learned—the hard way—how to take care of herself. Once a pillar of Charleston society, her family lost everything in the wake of a shocking scandal. And then Tilly lost the only boy she ever loved.

BUT NOW THAT HE’S BACK IN HER LIFE
Keaton Benedict is Charleston’s most notorious bachelor. But in spite of all his advantages—the money, the women, the family name—he longs for more: the heart of the young woman he still can’t forget.

THE DANGER HAS JUST BEGUN…
When Keaton re-enters Tilly’s life, after all these years, she is torn between feelings of doubt and desire. Can they put the past behind them and learn to love again? Tilly is willing to try. But Keaton is afraid that a vengeful enemy is watching—and waiting to destroy them. Can the rekindled flame of their love defeat the deadliest rival and light their way forward in the darkest night?

...because?

Over recent years, I've tended to stick to contemporary romance novels, with the occasional romantic suspense and historical books every now and again. In 2018 I plan to vary what I read a little more and more with suspense at the top of my list. This first book, by a new to me author sounds intriguing and I hope is the first of many.
