New Publication Spotlight & Author Guest Post: The Hidden by Alison Knight

AUTHOR GUEST POST

Thank you so much for inviting me onto your blog to talk about my new book, The Hidden. Like you, I’m a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and it was through their support and encouragement that I started to learn my craft as a writer. I’ve also made many, many friends there, who are all wonderful people who love to cheer on other romance writers. I hope to meet you at one of the RNA conferences in the future!

The Hidden is set in Montana in 1973. It features Faye, an Englishwoman with secrets to guard and who suffers regular nightmares, and Jeff, a wounded, traumatised soldier just home from Vietnam. It was a time when people were just beginning to recognise and name Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, although it was still a taboo subject and sufferers were ashamed to admit to their problems.

Jeff is also grieving the recent sudden death of his father, not knowing that he had allowed Faye to move into Jeff’s cabin on the edge of their family ranch lands. When he is discharged from hospital and arrives home in the middle of the night after driving thousands of miles to get there, he is greeted by Faye aiming a shotgun at him, and his dog, Bear, at her side.

This isn’t a good start for the pair as each refuses to leave. Thus starts an easy partnership. Faye is hostile and secretive, an upper-class English Rose, seemingly out of place in this wild landscape. Yet when Jeff tries to find out about her past, he comes up against a brick wall when it becomes clear that she is using an assumed name.

Jeff is struggling to settle back down into civilian life and Faye soon realises that he too suffers from nightmares and flashbacks. She is able to support Jeff as he tries to overcome his difficulties. But even as they grow closer, she refuses to reveal her secrets and this causes constant tension between them.

But when Faye’s past finally catches up with her, she and Jeff need to trust each other in order to survive.

This is my third book published by Darkstroke in recent months. All three (Mine, The Legacy and The Hidden) are standalone stories but each is linked to the next. If you want to know more about Faye’s previous life, you’ll find that story in The Legacy. All of these books are available as ebooks or paperbacks on Amazon.

BLURB

Secrets, nightmares, and a big black dog…

Montana, 1973.

Faye has found sanctuary in a simple cabin in the wilds of the Crazy Mountains in Montana with a dog called Bear. She’s a long way from her old life in England. But she knows that one day her peaceful life could be invaded by her enemies, and she keeps her guard up at all times.

Jeff returns home from Vietnam, a wounded, damaged hero, just weeks after his father’s sudden death. He finds hostile, secretive Faye living in his cabin and refusing to leave. The reading of his father’s will adds another layer of mystery to this woman’s presence.

The tension between them grows as Jeff tries to overcome his nightmares and expose Faye’s scars and secrets. The more he learns about her, the more enigmatic she seems.

When her enemies come calling, she needs Jeff to protect her. Can they learn to trust each other? And will Faye ever be safe?

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY

Alison Knight has been a legal executive, a registered childminder, a professional fund-raiser and a teacher. She has travelled the world – from spending a year as an exchange student in the US in the 1970s and trekking the Great Wall of China to celebrate her fortieth year and lots of other interesting places in between.

In her mid-forties, Alison went to university part-time and gained a first-class degree in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and an MA in the same subject from Oxford Brookes University, both while still working full-time. Her first book was published a year after she completed her master’s degree.

Alison currently has a trio of novels published by Darkstroke. The first, Mine, is a domestic drama set in 1960s London based on real events in her family. She is the only person who can tell this particular story. Exploring themes of class, ambition and sexual politics, Mine shows how ordinary people can make choices that lead them into extraordinary situations.

The Legacy, a drama set in London in 1969, was inspired by a scene in Mine, and explores how an unexpected legacy can be both a blessing and a curse. The Legacy looks at themes of greed and expectations, and the lengths people will go to when they are desperate.

The Hidden, available from September 2021, is a romantic suspense that picks up the story of one of the characters in The Legacy. Set in Montana in 1973, two wounded, damaged people are forced together, each guarding their secrets. Can they learn to trust each other? And will their nightmares ever end?

Alison teaches creative and life-writing, runs workshops and retreats with Imagine Creative Writing Workshops(www.imaginecreativewriting.co.uk) as well as working as a freelance editor. She is a member of the Society of Authors and the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

But fast forward several years – okay, many years – and the dream showed signs of becoming reality. She entered the Mail on Sunday Novel Competition, twice, and came fourth, twice. So there was the incentive to complete her first novel, Remarkable Things, which was published by Crooked Cat and shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association Joan Hessayon Award. New Publication Spotlight with an Extract: A Nun For The Viking Warrior by Lucy Morris

A Nun For The Viking Warrior by Lucy Morris

BLURB

Forced to wed the warrior

Falling for the man…

Noblewoman Amée Évreaux had pledged her life to God, until her father promised her in marriage to thundering Norseman, Jorund Jötunnson. After escaping her overbearing father, Amée vows never to fall under another man’s thumb, but her resistance to being Jorund’s wife turns to desire as she gets to know her intriguing new husband. For beneath his fierce exterior she’s glimpsed an unexpectedly pure heart. If only she can penetrate the fortress that surrounds it…

EXTRACT

NB: This is at the start of the novel. Jorund has just broken into Amée’s nunnery and is demanding to claim his bride.

‘Where is she?’

He raised his sword towards the abbess. The steel shone bright in the flickering flames of the sconces surrounding the entrance hall. ‘Where is she?’

The sight of her abbess being threatened was enough to spark the fiery temperament Amée struggled daily to control. She stepped in front of the sword. Unfortunately, because of her short stature, it still pointed above her head at the abbess. So, her gesture appeared futile. Regardless, she spoke with as much imperial command as she could muster. ‘I am Amée Évreux.’

‘You?’ He looked her up and down with barely concealed horror.

Amée tried not to take offence—after all, why should she care what this beast thought of her? She raised her chin defiantly. ‘How dare you enter this holy place with weapons raised? Even your leader, Rollo, has converted to Christ. He cannot condone such actions.’

He smiled, a flicker of respect crossing his features, and sheathed his sword. ‘I think you do not know the Jarl as well as I do, Lady Évreux. It’s good to finally meet you.’ His voice was a distant rumble of thunder that sent a shiver down her spine.

Her eyes narrowed. ‘Perhaps not, but I am a dear friend of his wife, Princess Gisla. She would never approve—’

‘She is the one who sent me.’

It was a mistake! It had to be.

Amée felt the blood drain from her face and she clutched the blanket tighter around her shoulders. The chill of the forest air rushed in after their intruders, bringing with it the cold dread of familial duty she’d hoped was long forgotten.

‘I am to be wed to Christ,’ she whispered. Even as she said the words, she knew her life had changed forever in some terrible way. Her father had broken his promise. She was his chattel and always would be. The ghost of hope, a life free from her father, disappeared with her misty breath into the midnight air.

Jorund stepped forward. His arm ring shone in the candlelight as he reached with a calloused hand to brush the hair away from her face. The raven curls she usually kept tightly bound beneath a novice wimple and veil flowed around her in thick sleep-mussed waves. In less than a month her hair would have been roughly shorn, and she would have taken her vows. The restrictions and chains of her life as Lady Amée Évreux cast aside. Ahead only spiritual peace and obscurity.

Not the hell her mother suffered. Not marriage.

‘No.’ He sighed, as if he pitied her. ‘You’re going to be wed to me.’

New Publication Spotlight & Author Guest Post: Add Cyanide To Taste by Karmen Å piljak

Add Cyanide to Taste by Karmen Å piljak

AUTHOR GUEST POST

A taste of culinary noir

If the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, then the path to their mind must be through stories. The stories that have stuck with me were related to food. Famous Five? Picnics with pie, sandwiches and ginger beer. Hercule Poirot? A foodie detective who can’t go without his tisane. What about those apples? They seem to be a rather popular item in storytelling as they pop up in classic fairytales like ‘Snow White’, but also in contemporary young adult fiction like ‘The Girl Who…’

For me, food and stories have always been connected. Perhaps that’s why I couldn’t resist the temptation of bringing the two together. Admittedly, my early attempts weren’t successful. In my first novel attempt, the sleuth and her sidekick were too busy eating to solve any crimes. Then again, I was only ten years old when I wrote this.

Food kept on sneaking into my stories, though, so a few decades later I decided to give it another go. This time, I’d keep the stories short and perky. Coming up with the ideas was easy. I got one while listening to an interview with a famous author who talked about calming down ghosts with food. Another one popped up in the most convenient place for such stories: in a restaurant. There were podcasts, too, and the more I thought about food stories, the easier it was to write them.

A cursed cake? You got it. A restaurant with a bizarre business model? Definitely, and what about all those foodie influencers with super-healthy lifestyles?

To add a bit of variety, I repurposed some of my old stories and gave them a fresh glaze. All the stories were dark and twisted and would come with recipes for some of the dishes featured in them.

When I shared this with my husband, he was enthusiastic, especially about the recipes part.

‘What kind of recipes?’

‘Pancakes, pasta, cookies and such.’

‘And you’d try them out?’

‘I guess so. Probably more than once.’

‘Who would eat them?

‘I don’t know. Us?’

‘If you insist.’

‘I’ve got a great title for the book, too.’

‘Oh? What is it?’

‘Add Cyanide to Taste.’

‘Cyanide?’

‘It’s only a title.’

‘But the food…’

‘Won’t contain any cyanide.’

‘Phew.’

A couple of months later, I had fourteen short stories and thirteen recipes. Since almost all food books have pictures, I asked my friend, Luka Rejec, a Slovenian artist and writer, to do illustrations. He read the stories before putting his talent to work and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

The ultimate test for ‘Add Cyanide to Taste’ is yet to come. I’m keen to hear whether reading culinary noir will make readers hungry and will lurk on #Cyanide2Taste for their photos of snacks and dishes they make. Preferably without the cyanide.

BLURB

A sinister cook, a cursed cake, and a casual dinner between neighbours that goes murderously wrong.

This debut collection of dark tales and recipes by Karmen Å piljak ascends the jagged culinary heights you’ve hungered to explore but could never find on a map. As the characters swoon over every unforgettable mouthful, and sometimes bite off more than they can chew, you’ll find yourself asking: What would I be willing to pay for the meal of a lifetime?

If feasting on culinary noir leaves you hungry, extend your pleasure by preparing the dishes featured in the stories. All recipes provided are cyanide-free.

REVIEW

If you enjoy dreaming of far off places with a stunning Mediterranean backdrop, T.A.Williams' delightful new novel is just for you!

Sophie and Rachel are reunited after their late uncle's will stipulates they must live together for three months, so they can inherit a castle in Paradiso, Italy. Much has happened to the estranged sisters since they last saw each other, so can they put the past behind them and rebuild their relationship long enough to claim what's bequeathed to them?

Fans of the author will delight in this new story, set along the North Italian Riviera coast. You'll love Sophie’s delightful dog, Jeeves, a black Labrador along with all the characters she encounters. This is a romance, yet, the focal point is how these two sisters mend their fractured relationship. Set against a stunning backdrop, the two young women work side by side to try to complete the tasks they have been set within the allotted time frame. It's an opportunity for them both to embrace life in the small village and to appreciate the magnitude of what could belong to them...

The author paints a vivid picture of the scenes within the narrative; The castle, history and culture of the small town come to life, courtesy of the insightful details. There are surprises along the way, as both young women have to come to terms with past events before moving forward with their lives. It's also an opportunity to forge new friendships and build plans for the future, although nothing is as easy as it seems as emotions run high.

Overall, another highly entertaining novel with a happy sunny ending from a favourite author.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m a man. And a pretty old man as well. I did languages at university a long time ago and then lived and worked in France and Switzerland before going to Italy for seven years as a teacher of English. My Italian wife and I then came back to the UK with our little daughter (now long-since grown up) where I ran a big English language school for many years. We now live in a sleepy little village in Devonshire. I’ve been writing almost all my life but it was only seven years ago that I finally managed to find a publisher who liked my work enough to offer me my first contract.

The fact that I am now writing escapist romance is something I still find hard to explain. My early books were thrillers and historical novels. Maybe it’s because there are so many horrible things happening in the world today that I feel I need to do my best to provide something to cheer my readers up. My books provide escapism to some gorgeous locations, even if travel to them is currently difficult.

New Publication Spotlight & Extract: Gloria by Katherine Shaw

Gloria by Katherine Shaw

BLURB

For all intents and purposes, Gloria Harrison has the perfect life: a rich husband, a beautiful home, and all the free time she needs to work on her art. And yet, she is deeply unhappy. Initially resigned to be pushed around by her snobbish, manipulative husband, Greg, she discovers a shocking truth about him she simply cannot ignore, and has to get out.

As Gloria’s world unravels around her, she has to team up with friends new and old to escape not only her husband’s clutches, but also the country, even if that means giving up everything.

Gloria must rediscover who she used to be and realise her true worth to finally free herself from Greg’s stranglehold forever, or risk losing the person she holds most dear in the world – her daughter.

EXTRACT

In this extract, we see Gloria’s last night with her manipulative husband, Greg. Tomorrow she plans to escape his clutches once and for all.

Gloria stiffened as the door swung open, bathing the bedroom in stark, white light. Her heart raced, but she fought to keep her breathing steady, eyes clenched shut. She didn’t want to speak to Greg; she didn’t even want to acknowledge his existence. Following their conversation today, she was at breaking point. She couldn’t keep up the charade any longer.

Gloria’s entire body tensed as she felt Greg’s weight drop down on the other side of the king-sized bed, but she didn’t move. She forced herself to breathe through trembling lips, hoping Greg would assume she was asleep and leave her alone. Her stomach turned as the weight of his arm settled over her torso, and he pulled her body towards his own.

Silent tears threatened to creep from behind Gloria’s closed eyelids as she felt Greg’s hot, heavy breathing on the back of her neck. Still, she didn’t move, lying perfectly still as the seconds dragged on for what seemed like an eternity. It was to her immense relief when Greg’s arm went limp, and his breathing slowed as sleep finally took him. The taste of salt tingled on her tongue as she released a quiet sob.

She just needed to get through this one night, and then she could leave. Forever.

There was no way she would be able to fall asleep.
