EXTRACT
In this extract, we see Gloria’s last night with her manipulative husband, Greg. Tomorrow she plans to escape his clutches once and for all.
Gloria stiffened as the door swung open, bathing the bedroom in stark, white light. Her heart raced, but she fought to keep her breathing steady, eyes clenched shut. She didn’t want to speak to Greg; she didn’t even want to acknowledge his existence. Following their conversation today, she was at breaking point. She couldn’t keep up the charade any longer.
Gloria’s entire body tensed as she felt Greg’s weight drop down on the other side of the king-sized bed, but she didn’t move. She forced herself to breathe through trembling lips, hoping Greg would assume she was asleep and leave her alone. Her stomach turned as the weight of his arm settled over her torso, and he pulled her body towards his own.
Silent tears threatened to creep from behind Gloria’s closed eyelids as she felt Greg’s hot, heavy breathing on the back of her neck. Still, she didn’t move, lying perfectly still as the seconds dragged on for what seemed like an eternity. It was to her immense relief when Greg’s arm went limp, and his breathing slowed as sleep finally took him. The taste of salt tingled on her tongue as she released a quiet sob.
She just needed to get through this one night, and then she could leave. Forever.
There was no way she would be able to fall asleep.
