Firstly, thank you for hosting us on Ellesea loves Reading preceding the upcoming release of our psychological thriller debut novel, Carrying Clover by Lorey Durston.
We have decided to give you an insight into one of our characters, Lizzie. We absolutely love her character she is vibrant, bubbly, but hides a lot of dark secrets. She sometimes speaks before she thinks, but her heart is in the right place, and she truly loves Camille, her foster sister and best friend - the main female character in Carrying Clover.
Lizzie has a deeply troubled and broken soul, she sees herself as a failure and embarrassment to herself and others, the older she gets the more jealous and envious of Camille she becomes. She hides this well and portrays herself having a big bubbly outgoing personality.
Lizzie had a traumatic childhood, she never knew her dad and her mum took her own life when she was a young age, leaving her an orphan and alone with no other family. She has always blamed herself for the death of her mum, being a burden and a failure to her. Lizzie finally settles in a foster home with two loving parents at the age of ten and was the only child for a few of years. She craved all the praise, attention, love, and for a while felt that she could do no wrong, until Camille arrived…
Although a couple years younger than her they grew close and became best friends, Lizzie loved having a younger sister who looked up to her. Her heart began to heal, and the memories and feelings started to fade. That period was short lived, Camille developed her own individuality when she became a few years older and all the pain and emotion Lizzie had buried deep down crept back up to the surface. The blame Lizzie carried for her mother’s death hit back with vengeance and she constantly felt she wasn’t good enough and could not compete with Camille. Whatever she did she felt that Camille always went one better, she was prettier, slimmer, smarter and couldn’t do no wrong in their foster parent’s eyes. Camille seemed to get all the luck and any praise for Lizzie became less.
The final straw for Lizzie was when Camille stole her boyfriend from her. She left for Bristol devastated, hurt, and betrayed that Camille could do that to her. The pair drifted apart; contact became non-existent for a few years until recently. Camille got back in contact with Lizzie for help as her relationship with the boy she had stolen from her had become toxic and abusive.
Lizzie may have forgiven the ultimate betray but she has not forgotten, she has always daydreamed of revenge, but it’s only thoughts she would never go through with any of them, or would she? Could you forgive and forget?
Throughout Carrying Clover, Lizzie is always there for Camille. Readers will see her being used and dropped in a second. How much more will Lizzie take before she explodes? Her emotions and thoughts fill more and more with jealousy, bitterness, despair, and desperation. Eventually they spiral out of control, but for what, and why?
