WAITING ON THE RAIN

Being blind doesnt hold Ava Bennet back in the least. With her work, her shopping, and public transportation within walking distance, shes totally at home in the big city. But shes not in the city now. Temporarily back in her small home town to help her father has her struggling in a big way.

Luke Walker is finished running from his troubled past. Finally home after years in the military, hes ready to make amends with his family and set down some roots. But adapting to civilian life is a lot harder than he ever expected.

She has no intention of sticking around. He has no plans to run again. All they have is one month together. Will it be enough for Luke to prove hes everything Ava needs—in light, in darkness, and most importantly, even in the rain?

Thought provoking!

Luke Walker is back after twenty years. The former Army Ranger is adjusting to civilian life and wondering if he made the right decision by leaving the military. A distraction comes from attending his brother, Zack's wedding... it's a perfect backdrop to begin the slow process of reconnecting with his family and meet other guests.

United Nations interpreter, Ava Lane is on extended leave from her job to provide care for her father. An invitation to a friend's wedding is an unexpected chance to spend some time away from her overprotective family and in doing so, meets the brother of the groom.

This novel is full of surprises and a delight to read. It emphasises the importance of family and trust. It's a story of new beginnings. The emotions tug at the heartstrings as Luke and Ava's story unfolds. We learn about the struggles and challenges both the protagonists are dealing with. Then comes the satisfying and heartwarming romance.

The author plays on the strengths of her characters… Ava, despite her disability is a strong, independent woman who isn't afraid to fight for her right to live her life how she sees fit. Luke overcomes his stubbornness to find a new purpose in life. Both come to terms with the past to build a new normal in the future… filled with unconditional love… a force to be reckoned with.

Overall an insightful and heartfelt novel. I've been a fan of Ms Connor's books since reading her debut novel and her latest; Waiting on the Rain is a fabulous addition to the McKinney/Walker Brothers series and can be enjoyed as standalone.

Release Day and Review: Waiting For You by Claudia Connor

WAITING FOR YOU by Claudia Connor
Second in the McKinney/Walker Series (and technically the 5th in the McKinney Brothers Series since the two series are so closely related and readers get a much needed fix of the McKinney men in the Walker books)
Nick Walker -FBI - Worth Wait
Zach Walker -firefighter - Waiting For you
Luke Walker -army ranger- coming soon
Dallas Walker- undercover cop- coming soon

When ER nurse Nora Sellers is hurt in a hospital scuffle, firefighter Zach Walker blames himself. Blaming himself is nothing new. He’s been blaming himself for years for the trauma his baby sister endured as a teenager. Though with his happy–go–lucky attitude no one would know it. He’s good at his job, he’s a good brother, and a good friend, but Zach decided long ago he wasn’t husband and father material.
Even so, when Zach learns Nora is a single mother with a house that needs his help, he can’t walk away. After a few days with Nora and her ten month old son, he knows he doesn’t want to.
But Nora’s wary. She learned at a young age that the only person she can count on is herself. Now with a baby, a job, and a fixer–upper house, the last thing Nora wants is a sexy firefighter, making her heart flutter. But Zach is more than what he seems, and the more she gets to know him the harder he is to resist.
She’s been brave all her life. Can she be brave one more time and take a chance of a lifetime with her heart?

Zach Walker has been happy with his carefree life but recently felt something wasn't right. With his older brother happily married, he was beginning to think something was missing, yet despite having an endless stream of female admirers he never wanted to make a connection permanent, until he literally bumps into a nurse at the hospital. He's instantly smitten, but what now?

Nora Sellers doesn't have time for a relationship. With an exhausting job as an ER nurse and a ten-month-old son to care for, there aren't enough hours in the day to have a relationship too. Besides, she needs to fix up her house. When she crashes in firefighter, Zach Walker, she's instantly attracted but how can she find time for someone like him around her hectic life?

A definite feel-good vibe is present within this novel as the narrative flows beautifully. The protagonists are perfect for each other, with a mutual understanding of the commitment required for their chosen careers. Still, nothing worthwhile in life is easy and for Zach, who has always kept everything in his life temporary and Nora, who from an early age learned the only person to rely on was yourself; changing mindset to form a loving, supportive relationship isn't something easily achieved. Life proves them both wrong and results in a satisfying happy ever after.

Anyone who has read any of Ms Connor's books will appreciate the details she adds to her current stories to include updates and titbits of gossip about characters which have already featured in books of their own. With the inclusion of the McKinney and now the Walker clan there's always plenty of uplifting and engaging details. However, this, like the other novels are standalone so this author's novels are enjoyable for any reader who loves a heart-warming romance.

She raised a hand before he could speak. “Stop. You don’t have to take care of me. Really sweet, but my arm’s not going to hurt any more at the store than it does here.”
He looked at her for a long beat then decided to give in. “I have a sister, so I know when to stop arguing. I’ll come by tomorrow to put in the smoke detectors.”
“Okay.”
“Anything else?”
“No. Well,” she said. “There is one thing I can’t do one handed, and it’s making me sweat.
Zach’s gaze swung back to hers. A feeling shot through him like spark along a wire, and he couldn’t have looked away to save himself.“My hair.” He cleared his throat. “Your hair?”
“Yeah. Do you think you could put it up for me? Doesn’t matter how it looks, but it’s starting to drive me crazy.”
“Okay. I can try.”
She held up her right hand, and he saw the black hair band on her wrist. He pulled it off and stood in front of her then watched her bend forward at the waist until her hair hung down and her shirt rode up in the back, revealing a few inches of bare skin above her shorts.
“Just kind of gather it up,” she said.
He slid his palms over the silky strands until he had it gathered together. He kept going over her scalp and down to the ends, using one hand then the other, liking the feel of it. He had no idea what to do next. His heart jerked and jumped, and he hated the sensation. He preferred things calm, easy.
“You might have to get closer. Maybe stand beside me, kind of.” She slowly straightened, and he held onto the ponytail in his hand. “Okay. Now just tie it. Go around once then again and pull it halfway through. Perfect.”
“So that’s how you do it,” he said, taking in the half-twisted hairdo. “I always wondered.” And he wondered—just for a second—what that mouth of hers might taste like. If it would be as soft as it looked.
“Yep, that’s how we do it.” She gave her head a little shake, and his hairdo held. “Thank you. It makes the world at least twenty degrees cooler.”
Speak for yourself, Zach thought and figured now was a good time to leave.

New Cover Reveal and Review: Love at Last by Claudia Connor

Love at Last
A Standalone Romance
By: Claudia Connor
Released April 24th, 2018

Easy to love, easy to leave.

With her ex-fiance's words, I'm in love with someone else, still ringing in her ears, Clare Franklin flies off on her would-be honeymoon alone. Resigned to the fact that not everyone gets a happily ever after, she's sworn off men. Until she gets tangled up, quite literally, with one very sexy veterinarian.

The only thing Dr. Deacon Montgomery is looking to share is his surgical expertise, but his instant attraction to Clare makes him wonder if he could be more than just a doctor, and daddy to his twin two-year old daughters.

Sun-filled days and hot, steamy nights only deepens the connection, causing them each to hope for something more. Until one phone call from home changes everything. But a love like theirs is hard to find, and definitely too hard to forget.

Amazon      iBooks       Nook       Kobo
Attending a conference on a tropical island still means all work and no play to Dr Deacon Montgomery until he sees a beautiful woman and asks her out for dinner. A fling is just what he needs but spending time with Clare makes him realise how lonely he is. When a phone call summons him home, he leaves without saying goodbye, but their story is far from over.

Clare Franklin should be on her honeymoon, but without a husband, the trip to the Dominican Republic has become a singles holiday. After the drama, it's a chance to relax and recuperate before moving to Chicago to begin her new life. Surrounded by sun, sea and sand it's more than she needs until a sexy fellow guest walks into her life and turns it upside down.

It's complicated! Deacon and Clare's relationship may have begun almost perfectly, surrounded palm trees and the sound of waves but the reality now is unfamiliar. Their path to reconnect after Deacon's hasty departure is full of misunderstands. When they finally reconnect, their attraction to each other is still there, but with the added baggage of undisclosed information not shared in the Dominican Republic and a surprise discovery, the protagonists have greater challenges to overcome than the geographical distance between them.

I'm not a huge fan of children included within a romance novel however, Ms Connor always has a knack of incorporating little people into her narratives which doesn't detract away from the sexual chemistry between the protagonists. As a single father of twins, Deacon is caring and considerate of others, even though he has little time for himself. Yet, he still manages to go the extra mile when he and Clare finally reconnect. Clare isn't the same woman he fell for on the tropical island, her life has changed dramatically since he distracted her from the memory of her non-wedding day. She's strong and determined but cautious so their relationship begins tenuously as past actions are forgiven.

With strong secondary characters to support Deacon and Clare, the beginning may have started quickly, but circumstances slowed it down in a satisfying way. The ending is a sugar-coated cliché, but satisfying all the same. Overall, a fun, light and entertaining novel. Perfect for a poolside read with a cool drink.

His wide, warm palm grazed her lower back as they wove their way through the tables to the exit. They crossed over the water garden in silence, slowing as they reached a fork in the path.
Which way?” Deacon asked. “I’ll walk you back.”
That’s sweet, but you really don’t have to. It’s a five-star resort, not downtown Los Angeles.”
Deacon kept walking. “True. But you know, I took you to dinner and all.”
She arched a brow at him. “It’s also an all-inclusive resort. Maybe I took you.”
Maybe you did.”
He flashed her that slightly lopsided grin that hit her right in the chest. She conceded to the walk, and together, they followed the brick path. The resort was dark, but lights along the sidewalk lit the path and shined up the skinny gray trunks of the swaying palms. It was quiet, and when they didn’t pass even one other person, she was glad he was walking her back.
She slowed as they came to the breezeway leading to her building and pointed up the steps to the second floor. “I’m up there, so…”
Deacon started up the steps. “I’ll walk you to the door. I’m funny like that.”
She probably should have said no, insisted that she could make it to her door on her own. Because of course she could. But she didn’t insist, just followed enormously glad she’d removed the HONEYMOON banner from her door.
They reached her room, and she turned to face him. Just the two of them now, up here, alone at her door. She felt a slight buzzing in her head that had nothing to do with alcohol.
Well, Clare of the here and now.”
She rolled her eyes at the reminder of her earlier word-vomit ramble. “It was nice to meet you.” She stuck out her hand, hoping it wasn’t sweaty.
It was nice to meet you, too.”
It didn’t feel like a simple handshake as he wrapped his fingers around hers. “I had fun tonight. You turned what might have been a horrible night into something surprisingly nice.”
I’m glad.”
Thank you for catching me and saving my top and for dinner and talking and…” And maybe she could stop talking.
You’re welcome.”
A frog gave a low croak, and another answered, but she figured the pounding of her heart was louder.
The buzzing in her head grew louder, and she felt dizzy from looking into his eyes and staring at his lips because she wanted him to kiss her. She wanted to feel those smooth, firm lips on hers, to taste him and feel his arms around her. I'm losing my mind.
You’re beautiful,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to say that all night.” He lifted his hand and lightly brushed his thumb over her cheek.
Then he leaned in, and she moved. Just…moved. In and up, her fingers twisting in the front of his shirt. She was just falling into the taste of him, just getting that warm, tingling flood of a first kiss when her brain fully registered that he’d been leaning in to kiss her cheek.
I’m sorry.” She swallowed hard, felt a stinging heat flooding into her cheeks, and wished desperately to disappear. Deacon was staring at her in complete confusion. That made two of them. “I’m… really sorry.”
She spun to her door. A stiff wind sang through the open-air hallway, slapping her hair across her eyes. How she got her key in the lock, she had no idea. Mumbling one more apology over her shoulder, she opened the door and closed it behind her. She stood, heart pounding in mortification, her lips buzzing.
The champagne glasses and fruit and cheese tray had been cleared. The bed had been turned back, and the damn swans were back, nestled in the center of the bed and kissing right on their terrycloth lips.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? This book blog meme has had a few hosts in its past but is now in the capable hands of Kathryn at The Book Date. It's a place where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It's a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and to put new titles on your reading list.

Life right now!

I'm glad a new month begins tomorrow as it feels like a clean slate. The past two months have been a challenge but I'm hoping May brings some positivity which we need.
The weather has been settled although it's raining like mad today but the end of the week should hopefully bring some sunshine.
Reading wise, I was productive last week by not only catching up on outstanding reviews but the number of books read. Like many readers I have a large amount of unread novels downloaded to my Kindle, so apart from the arc's, I've been making an effort to read some of them rather than 1-clicking and buying more.

What am I currently reading?

Nora has always been the sister who binds the O'Bannons together. No matter what crisis hits, smart, dependable Nora knows how to fix it. But for Nora, the pressure of perfection is taking its toll.

Nora's marriage is in trouble, and she has been reluctant to worry her sisters with just how dire her situation is. Now though, faced with losing her husband, her home, and the life she's worked so hard to build, Nora can no longer pretend.

As the O'Bannon women rally around her, Nora begins to see that failure is nothing to fear. It's like they say in the bakery: if you want to make something good, you can't be afraid to get messy. When her husband returns, asking Nora to give their family a second chance, Nora must decide if their relationship can be saved-or if it's time to throw out the old recipe and start from scratch.

Thoughts so far...

It's book two in the series and I've not read the previous one and the author is new to me too. I don't feel I've missed anything by jumping into the series, so it works as a standalone. A little different from what I'm used to, but as I vowed to broaden my reading preferences beyond romance at the beginning of the year, this title fits in nicely. I'm at the half way point and enjoying the narrative and the writing style so far. It's a solid read with likeable characters trying to work through their many issues. Apart from the protagonists, there are a couple of sub plots that I'm guessing will follow through into future instalments.

Book(s) I've read this past week?

I Think I Love You, Oxford #5 by Lauren Layne (arc)

Hunter Cross has always figured there’s nothing his best friend Brit can do to surprise him. But Brit’s request is a surprise he doesn’t see coming—and one he’s definitely not prepared for. Hunter and Brit have always been careful to keep things perfectly platonic, but the fake dates and faux flirting are starting to feel like the real deal. And soon Hunter realizes he has taught Brit too well. Not only has she become an expert at seduction, the man becoming thoroughly seduced is him.
