New Release Spotlight with a Book Extract: Starting Over at the Vineyard Alsace by Julie Stock

Starting Over at the Vineyard in Alsace by Julie Stock

It’s springtime at The Vineyard in Alsace, a new season and a new beginning
After being abandoned by her partner when she falls pregnant, Lottie Schell goes home to live on The Vineyard in Alsace, where she has started a new relationship with the estate’s winemaker, Thierry. Now about to give birth, Lottie’s determined to raise her child and to provide for them both on her own without having to depend on anyone else.
Thierry Bernard is still dealing with his grief and guilt following the death of his wife two years earlier, for which he blames himself. When he meets Lottie, the instant attraction he feels towards her gives him hope that he can move on from the tragedy of his past, as long as he can tell Lottie the truth of what happened.
When circumstances force Lottie and Thierry closer together, they both find it hard to compromise – she’s proudly independent and he’s fiercely protective – and they’re both wary about trusting someone new with their heart.
Can Lottie and Thierry take a chance on each other, move on from their pasts and start over?
Escape to The Vineyard in Alsace once again with this romantic read set in the heart of Alsace’s wine country.

Extract 3 for Ellesea Loves Reading
Despite Lottie’s need for independence, her options start to look limited when Sylvie tells her that her friend, Frédéric, has asked her to move in with him.
Finally, she replied to Sylvie’s point. ‘It would be an easy solution for me to move in with Thierry, but there are lots of reasons why I don’t think it would be the best idea right now.’ She didn’t elaborate, knowing how fond Sylvie was of Thierry, and not wanting to criticise him in front of her.
Sylvie fiddled with her rings. ‘To tell you the truth, Frédéric has asked me to move in with him, and I’ve been weighing up all the pros and cons, just as you have. I like my independence too, you see.’
Lottie grinned. She and Sylvie had a lot in common.
I can only see pros, Sylvie. You’re finding it difficult to manage the garden on your own now – you said that yourself – and if you move in with Frédéric, you can tend the garden together, and you’ll enjoy having his company. Not only that, but there would be plenty of room for Chlöe to come and stay. So what’s stopping you from saying yes?’
Well, first of all, I promised your family I’d look after you, and the baby, when it comes, and I don’t want to let them or you down by going back on that promise.’
Lottie threw her hands up in the air. ‘This is why I haven’t ever learned to support myself, because my whole family treats me like I’m a child. You’re not responsible for my welfare, Sylvie. You must put yourself first.’
They’re only looking out for you, Lottie. And I’d feel a lot happier about accepting Frédéric’s proposal if you were settled somewhere else, with a support network around you, especially if you do want to go back to work eventually. There’s no shame in accepting help, you know, and Thierry really wants to help you.’
Lottie placed their coffees on the table. She sat down again, trying not to take out her frustration with her family on Sylvie when she’d been so good to her.
Thierry’s not ready for me to move in, despite what he says. He’s still not over the death of his wife, and I think he needs more time.’
Sylvie took a sip of her coffee. ‘Yes, I agree. He’s never got over what happened to Nicole. He used to be such a carefree young man before life intervened and changed his outlook forever. Such a tragedy, when they loved each other so much. But perhaps if you moved in, you could help him to come to terms with everything.’
Although Lottie was interested to hear Sylvie’s take on Thierry’s situation, she couldn’t help feeling that there were too many secrets surrounding him. She wanted to hear about his past from him rather than from everyone else, but he showed no sign of relenting.
If you want to move in with Frédéric, I will completely understand. It would make a lot of sense, and if I’m going to move out anyway in the near future, there’s no point you hanging on here any longer than you need. Someone will be able to take me in. You mustn’t worry about it.’
As much as she believed what she was saying, Lottie had no idea where she would go if Sylvie did decide to move in with Frédéric. Right now, Thierry seemed to be offering the only option.

Book Birthday Celebration: From Here to Nashville by Julie Stock

From Here to Nashville by Julie Stock

Two worlds, 4,000 miles apart. Is their love strong enough to keep them together?

Rachel Hardy dreams of being a successful country music singer in Nashville's Music City, four thousand miles away from her lonely life in Dorset. When Jackson Phillips, an independent record label owner, encourages her band to audition for a nationwide 'Open Mic' competition, she decides they have nothing to lose.

But when she starts to fall in love with Jackson, the stakes suddenly get higher and she finds herself with a great big dilemma on her hands. Should she abandon her dream and take the easy way out or should she leave the life she has always known behind and take a gamble on a man who has personal demons of his own?

Follow Rachel and Jackson as they learn to trust in love again to see whether their music really can unite them.

This extract is from the beginning of chapter 3. Rachel bumps into Jackson after attending church and they go for a drink together, and she starts to find out more about him.

‘How about you, what do you do for a living that allows you to come to Dorset for the best part of a month?’ I smiled, hoping he would tell me more about himself.
‘I run a small business in Nashville which I’ve left in the hands of my very capable team so it’s okay for me to be gone a while. I have some business interests in London so I’ve been up and down there a few times during my visit to earn my keep.’ I noticed he didn’t tell me what his business was in but I didn’t want to seem rude by asking too many questions. ‘Tom was telling me about a singing competition that’s going on here over the summer,’ he continued. ‘Have you heard about it? It’s called “Open Mic”, I think he said.’
‘No, I haven’t heard about it but it sounds interesting. Do you know any more about it?’
‘He said it’s a nationwide competition and there’s an audition process. You guys would have no trouble getting through, I’m sure.’
He glanced out to sea as he finished talking so I couldn’t see his face to get any clue about how strongly he felt about this. I had the sense that he was trying to be neutral about it but I wasn’t sure why.
‘I’ll have to look it up. Thanks for telling me about it.’ I smiled.
We continued chatting for a bit longer and then walked back to the cottage.

New Release Spotlight and Guest Post: The Bistro by Watersmeet Bridge by Julie Stock

The Bistro by Watersmeet Bridge by Julie Stock

People often ask me how I come up with the ideas for my stories, and I think it’s something that many authors will have been asked at one point or another. To anyone who isn’t a writer, it perhaps seems incredible that we manage to come up with one idea after another for our books.

However, when I deliver my talks about my self-publishing journey, I always say that one of the reasons it took me so long to get started on writing a book was because I couldn’t come up with an idea that I thought I’d be able to sustain over 80 – 90 thousand words. So I can totally understand why people are amazed by the way writers just seem to have an endless supply of ideas for stories.

Then one day it all changed for me when I had an idea for my first contemporary romance, From Here to Nashville. The initial spark of an idea was inspired by watching the TV show ‘Nashville’ and the country music I heard in that programme, and also the setting of Nashville itself. Once I had that first thought, the ideas just kept coming for that story. So off I went and I haven’t really looked back. I find inspiration everywhere, from TV programmes, articles I read, people I meet and also from my own personal experience.

With my second novel, The Vineyard in Alsace, inspiration came from my love of France and all things French, and also a few years spent working in the wine trade. This time I was writing what I knew to some extent which made things a bit easier.

My latest novel, The Bistro by Watersmeet Bridge, is also partly based on my life experience. Many years ago, my husband and I dreamed of running our own restaurant, and then we saw that a restaurant we loved was up for sale. It was a fish and seafood place in the Scottish Highlands, and we seriously considered buying it. We hadn’t started our family yet so we were free to do it, but our lives were in Bedfordshire in the UK, and there was also the fact that we had absolutely no experience of running a restaurant! And much as we loved cooking and eating food, it’s one thing to be a good home cook, and quite another to run a restaurant… So we never did fulfil that dream.

Fast forward twenty odd years and I was browsing on Right Move one day, looking at restaurants for sale, as you do, when I spotted a typical French restaurant for sale in a seaside town in Devon. It had a burgundy façade, with half height curtains in the window, and checked tablecloths. And I fell in love with it. And then the idea for my story came. What if you had a chef with a failing restaurant and he gets bought out by a soulless chain? The owner of the chain insists the chef stays on to support the new manager – his daughter – who has never run a restaurant before…

So while I never got to run my own restaurant, I’ve managed to experience the feeling by writing a book about one instead. We don’t regret never going ahead and buying that little place up in Scotland because we know just how hard a job it is to both run a restaurant and to make a success of it, as Olivia and Finn, my characters in The Bistro by Watersmeet Bridge are about to find out.

When Olivia goes to manage Finn's failing bistro, will they end up sharing a table for two, or will it be a recipe for disaster?
Olivia Fuller longs to manage one of the restaurants in her father’s chain and to break free to live the independent life she’s wanted for so long. When her father finally puts his trust in her and sends her to a failing restaurant in Devon, she’s confident she can prove herself capable of doing the job.
Finn Anderson is about to lose his beloved seaside bistro, unless the bank can find a buyer to dig him out. When George Fuller offers Finn a deal, he has no choice but to accept if he wants any chance of getting his bistro back one day. And then the new manager arrives…
Even after meeting the prickly chef and discovering his complete lack of business skills,
Olivia is confident she can turn the struggling business round. But as Olivia and Finn start working together, a mutual attraction develops between them, and soon, nothing is going according to Olivia’s plan.
When there’s a real chance that the bistro might be sold off, Olivia and Finn determine to fight for it, united by their hard work and their growing feelings for each other.
But can they save the bistro and be together, or does destiny have a different path in mind?
