New Release Spotlight & Exclusive Extract: Rage and Retribution by Lorraine Mace

Rage and Retribution by Lorraine Mace

Can two wrongs ever make a right?
A man is found by the side of a canal, comatose and brutally attacked.
It quickly becomes clear that someone is abducting men and subjecting them to horrific acts of torture. After three days they're released, fighting for their lives and refusing to speak.
A councillor is accused of fraud.
Montague Mason is an upstanding member of the community. That is until he's publicly accused of stealing the youth centre's funds - an accusation that threatens to rip through the very heart of the community and expose his best-kept secret. But how far would he go to protect himself?
Two cases. One deadly answer.
As the two cases collide, D.I. Paolo Sterling finds he has more questions than answers. And, when torture escalates to murder, he suddenly finds himself in a race against time to find the killer and put an end to the depravity - once and for all.

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling has been heavily involved in fundraising for the Bradchester Youth Centre and was asked to unveil the plaque.
As the applause died down, he picked up the scissors from the lectern and turned to face the velvet curtain covering the plaque.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce the reopening of Bradchester’s Youth Centre,” he said, cutting the ribbon and allowing the purple cover to fall.
The gasp from the assembled audience was almost deafening. Defacing the plaque in vivid red letters were the words: MASONS A CRUK
Paolo turned back into the glare of flashing lights as the press photographers fired off shot after shot. The reporters clamoured forward, shooting questions without giving him chance to answer.
“What do you know about this?”
“Are you going to investigate?”
“Did this come as a surprise to you?”
“What are you going to do about it?”
“Will you arrest Councillor Mason?”
“Is there money missing? If yes, why haven’t you arrested the councillor?”
Paolo held up his hands in the classic position of surrender and shouted to be heard over the cacophony.
“At the moment I know as much about this as you do.”
A strident voice interrupted him. “I repeat: are you going to investigate? Did you know money was missing? After all, you were the main fundraiser.”
Paolo couldn’t see beyond the flashing bulbs, but recognised the voice and sighed. A query that loaded could only have come from Gordon Hennessy, muckraker supreme for the Bradchester Sport. He should have known that piece of slime would put the worst possible interpretation on anything to do with the centre.
“Yes, there will be an investigation, but as of this moment I have no reason to suspect the councillor of any wrongdoing. This could simply be an attempt to smear his name by someone bearing a grudge.”
“Is it true the councillor is a friend of yours? Is that why you’re so quick to defend him?”
Paolo looked through the glare to the spot from where he thought the last question had been yelled.
“I am not defending anyone, Mr Hennessy. I have said there will be an investigation and there will be one. However, at this moment all we have is an accusation scrawled in what looks like lipstick. Until I find evidence of wrongdoing, it would be premature of me to accuse anyone of a crime. However, to answer your question, no, Councillor Mason and I are not friends. We do not socialise and have only come together on this project. Outside of this, we have no contact. I trust that puts your mind at rest.”
Paolo permitted himself an inward smile. Far from being friends, he and Montague Mason had locked horns on just about every aspect of the renovation project, but he had no intention of sharing that with the press – the gutter variety or the more responsible kind.
He held his hands up again and kept them in the air until the noise abated.
“Gentlemen and ladies of the press, clearly there is something here for me to look into, even it is nothing more than a case of defamation of character. I’m afraid I must ask you all to clear the hall as I need to close this area off to allow tests to be taken of the substance on the plaque. Perhaps you would like to make your way to the cafeteria, where I believe refreshments have been laid on for this evening.”

New Release Spotlight and Excerpt: Injections of Insanity by Lorraine Mace

Injections of Insanity by Lorraine Mace

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling has just six weeks to solve a series of murders by insulin injection, with nothing to connect the victims except the manner of death and a note left at each crime scene.
The murderer, determined to avenge a wrong from many years earlier, gets close to his prey by assuming various identities.
Can Paolo win in his race against the pretender?

Chapter One
Week One – Friday 25th July to Thursday 31st July
In the lift, aware of the security camera overhead, the pretender kept his head down and his eyes on the envelope he held in his right hand. In his left hand was a laptop case, but there was no computer inside. What it did contain would come as a surprise to the man he was about to call on. The lift finally arrived at the top floor and the doors slid silently open to allow him to step into a marble-panelled vestibule with ornately gilded mirrors on the walls to his left and right. He didn’t bother looking at his reflection; he knew what he looked like and so, too, would the police by this time tomorrow. Much good that would do them.
Opposite the lift was a single door. Privileged entrance to the only apartment on the penthouse floor. He briefly wondered what it must feel like to be rich, but shrugged off the thought. He wasn’t interested in money. All he wanted was to achieve his goal. And today he’d take the first step.
He walked across vestibule and pressed the buzzer.
The door opened and the woman whose movements he’d been watching and timing for the past month stood on the threshold.
“Professor Edwards is expecting me,” he said, handing over a visiting card.
The woman glanced at it and then gave it back. “Yes, Mr Buchanan. The professor is waiting for you in his study. I’ll show you the way.”
He slipped the card into his jacket pocket, inwardly smiling at how easy it was to fool someone with no more than a rectangle of cardboard he’d had made up in a quick print store. Concentrate, he told himself, this is no time to lose focus. He followed her along the hallway. Tastefully decorated, he thought, looking around at the bronze sculptures, watercolours and oil paintings adorning the walls. But then Professor Edwards was a very wealthy man, so he shouldn’t have expected anything less.
They passed closed doors on the left and right, but no windows. He wondered where the light was coming from and looked up. A massive skylight filled most of the space above his head. He wondered if you’d ever get tired of looking up and seeing the blue sky above instead of having your view limited by a ceiling, like most of the world. Was Professor Edwards immune to the view from his wonderful home? It didn’t matter, one way or the other.
The professor didn’t have much time left to enjoy being rich enough to afford a penthouse in the most prestigious apartment complex in Bradchester.

This second book in the Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling series is standalone.

With the murder of a child linked to a child prostitution ring, determined DI Sterling wants to seek justice for the young victim. However, his investigations find the links are international, spread far beyond Bradchester making him wonder if there's a remote chance of shutting down the network of abusers?

A step away from what I normally read, this novel has an intriguing, dark narrative and definitely not for the faint-hearted. I confess to feeling a little apprehensive about my own ability to cope with the harrowing narrative. Thankfully, I managed but it wasn't an easy read. The scenario is sobering, thought-provoking and difficult to read sometimes due to shocking details which emerge. So, when the case is finally wrapped up, it's a relief.

A side plot about Paolo's life away from work is one aspect where I do wonder about what happened earlier in his life, leading me to wonder if I should have read book one first. The thought is borne out of my own curiosity rather than thinking this novel is missing something, which it isn't. The author does a fine job of including the relevant back story so readers won't feel they are missing important facts.

The author's writing style focuses on keeping the narrative flowing and the details always relevant to keep the reader invested within the plot. The theme is dark and disturbing yet she manages to deal with the subject matter in a respectful way. Structured like crime stories for the small and big screen, there's a twist near the end which I didn't foresee but greatly appreciated.

Overall, fans of crime thrillers will enjoy this novel and will want to pick up others in the series too. I know I'm motivated to read more about DI Sterling.

Ellesea Loves Reading – Retriever of Souls extract
This extract is from the killer’s point of view as he trawls looking for his next soul to save.
Extract begins …
He peered through the car’s windscreen and smacked his fist against the steering wheel. None of the girls strolling up and down the street matched his ideal. After a while the windscreen misted over, so he wiped away the condensation with a gloved hand. As a gap cleared he saw a newcomer join the procession and his heart raced. Snapping down the sunshield, he took the photo from its hiding place and compared the features and colouring of the young woman on the other side of the road. She moved under the street light, and he realised she was perfect. She was everything the Lord demanded. He started his car, ready to edge over to her side of the road.
At that moment, a car came round the corner and crawled to a halt. The girl sauntered over. Within seconds, she’d climbed in. He burned with rage as his prize was driven away.
Waves of nausea flowed over him as he fought to control his fury. Eventually he was able to breathe again. Reaching up, he replaced the photo and flipped the sunshield back. At least now he knew where to find her. He’d come back tomorrow and the next night, every night until he could pick her up.
He had to save her – he had no choice but to relive his first killing again and again until the Lord told him to stop.
