Review: Agricola's Bane by Nancy Jardine

Agricola’s Bane by Nancy Jardine

A.D. 84 Northern Roman Britain
Nith of Tarras helps Enya of Garrigill in the search for her kin, missing after the disastrous battle at Beinn na Ciche fought between the Caledonian warriors and the mighty Ancient Roman legions. Enya soon has a heartrending choice to make. Should she tread Vacomagi territory that’s swarming with Roman auxiliaries to find her brother? Or, should she head south in search of her cousin who has probably been enslaved by the Romans?
The Commander of the Britannic Legions and Governor of Britannia – General Gnaeus Iulius Agricola – is determined to claim more barbarian territory for the Roman Empire, indeed plans to invade the whole island, but finds not all decisions are his to make. It increasingly seems that the goddess, Fortuna, does not favour him.
The adventures of the Garrigill clan continue...

The fourth novel in the Celtic Fervour series is standalone, although I highly recommend the first three books to gain more insight into the Garrigill characters and back story.

The story picks up where we left off in Donning Double Cloaks as the focus switches over to the younger generation of the Garrigill Clan. It's AD84 and Beathan, son of Lorcan and Ruoridh, son of Gabrond are missing after the devastating battle at Beinn na Ciche between the Caledonians and the Roman legion. Therefore, aided by Nith of Tarras, Enya, the young warrior daughter of Gabrond sets out to find her kin and to gain valuable intelligence about Agricola's intentions.

While there's much focus on the adventure and fortunes of the young warriors, the author keeps us informed about Agricola, as he continues his ruthless campaign. After sevens summers as governor of Britannia, he's becoming weary of his time in Northern Britain, especially during the harsh winters in areas, he deems inhospitable barbarian territories.

As I've come to expect with a Nancy Jardine novel, the narrative is full to the brim with fascinating insights and historical details. While it takes me a while to fully remember the names of the characters and places, the writing style makes it eas
ier to absorb the rich facts skilfully wrapped around intriguing plot lines. Set against a timeline I knew very little about before picking up the first book in this series, I also appreciate how the author brings the characters to life, specifically, Enya and her confusing emotions. It's a time in her life where she's coming of age and has conflicting feelings; she has to choose to between what she believes is right for her family, rather than listen to her heart.

Overall, the ending is satisfying and the scene is set for book five. This series has hooked me in and I hope the next instalment is ready to read soon?

Nancy Jardine writes historical fiction; time-travel historical adventure; contemporary mystery thrillers; and romantic comedy. She lives in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where life is never quiet or boring since she regularly child minds her young grandchildren who happen to be her next-door neighbours. Her garden is often creatively managed by them, though she does all the work! Her husband is a fantastic purveyor of coffee and tea…excellent food and wine! (Restorative, of course)

Book Blog Tour Stop & Review, After Whorl: Donning the Double Cloak by Nancy Jardine.

After Whorl: Donning Double Cloaks by Nancy Jardine

AD 73 Northern Roman Britain

Brennus of Garrigill—Bran—monitors Roman activity across Brigantia. Stability prevails till AD 78 when Agricola, Governor of Britannia, orders complete conquest of all barbarians. Brennus heads north, seeking the Caledon who will lead the northern tribes against Rome.
Ineda treks northwards with her master, Tribune Valerius – supplies officer for Agricola’s Britannia campaigns. At Pinnata Castra, she escapes and seeks fellow Brigantes congregating for battle in the north.

The Legions of the Roman Empire and the Caledon allies clash at Beinn na Ciche in AD 84, but where are Brennus and Ineda?

The adventures of the Garrigill Clan continue…

This third book in the Celtic Fervour series is my favourite so far. This novel follows straight on from The Beltane Choice and After Whorl: Bran Reborn. We discover what happened to Ineda and Bran after they are ambushed by a passing a Roman patrol.

The timeline scans ten years with the focus mostly on Ineda and her life in captivity. It's fascinating to understand the dynamics of the relationship between her and her captor Tribune Valerius. Despite the hostility between them in the beginning, over time, there's a softening of feelings between them. The result allows Ineda to use the information openly discussed between them to help keep the local people informed about the Romans intentions.

The outcome of this novel appeals to my romantic side. I heartily enjoyed Lorcan and Nara's story in The Beltane Choice and since then have enjoyed updates about them along the way. Yet it's Bran and Ineda story which grabbed my imagination the most and knowing they finally have a happy ending is heartfelt and satisfying especially after what both have experienced during their time apart and how acceptance and trust allows them to be together.

For those who enjoy intriguing historical stories wrapped around absorbing facts, The Celtic Fervour series is a must-read. Nancy Jardine masterfully writes a flowing narrative full of detail. I particularly enjoy learning about how the Romans and the local tribes lived their days to day lives.

So what's next? I'm looking forward to continuing this saga with the fourth novel; Agricole's Bane.

Book Blog Tour Stop & Review: After Whorl:Bran Reborn by Nancy Jardine

After Whorl: Bran Reborn by Nancy Jardine

AD 71 Northern Roman Britain
Ravaged at the Battle of Whorl, Brennus of Garrigill is irrevocably changed. He embraces a new identity as Bran, vowing to avert Roman domination of Brigantia. Though how, when he and Ineda – his healer’s granddaughter – are forced to labour for the Roman IX Legion? Trading with the usurpers provides opportunities for gathering information, but after they are attacked by a Roman patrol, Ineda cannot be found.

Distraught with her loss, can Bran find a new occupation?

The adventures of the Garrigill Clan continue…

This second book picks up after the battle of Whorl. Brannus of Garrigill is a long way from home and presumed dead. Badly injured he's nursed back to health by an old woman called Meaghan. Meanwhile, Nara is now free from her betrothal to follow her heart and into the arms of his brother, Lorcan.

With the focus of this book on Brannus, I was a little sad because I really enjoyed getting to know Lorcan and Nara in The Beltane Choice. However, Bran is such a lovely gentle giant of a man so I quickly warmed to his personality and enjoyed his interactions with Meaghan's teenage granddaughter, Ineda.

After regaining his strength and learning to live with his disabilities, it's only fitting this warrior takes on a new name, it's a rebirth to allow him to blend in with his new surroundings as he attempts to continue helping his people from a distance by collecting information about the Romans and their plans. Aided by Ineda, she proves to be a strong, feisty, and resourceful companion as well as a distraction.

The narrative is bursting with facts and the author's attention to detail is admirable. All this, wrapped around an intriguing narrative with fascinating characters. Still, in 71AD, I absorbed the lifestyle of these resilient people with respect and admire how they managed to survive in such hostile surroundings. Now I need to find out the fate of Bran and Ineda in Donning Double Cloaks.

Book Blog Tour Spotlight and Review: The Beltane Choice by Nancy Jardine

The Beltane Choice by Nancy Jardine

AD 71 Northern Roman Britain
Lorcan of the Brigantes knows that unity of the northern tribes is essential when the Ancient Roman legions advance northwards to Brigantia. Yet, everything comes at a price. Using his captive, Nara, as a political bargain with the Selgovae comes with impossible stipulations. Battle at Whorl – Iron Age tribes against the Romans – is inevitable.

Will Nara have her Beltane choice?

The adventures of the Garrigill Clan begin…

This first book in the Celtic Fervour series is an action-pact filled novel with intrigue in what promises to be an addictive series.

AD 71 and the northern tribes must work together to stop the Romans from entering their territory. When Lorcan of the Brigante people meets Nara of the Selgovae, there's a reason for both to be suspicious of each other. Yet in time, they find a common attraction. however, fate has other ideas for these warriors who face making personal sacrifices for the clans they united and represent.

As meetings go, I laughed at Ms Jardine's original and fun way the protagonists find each other. With Lorcan spotting Nara hiding in a tree, trying to escape an attack from a wild boar, I enjoyed their electrically charged but tense introduction at a time when anyone could be suspected as a potential enemy. With vivid descriptions of the settings, I visualised the scenery and the backdrop of not only this scene but the whole narrative.

Although I do read historical novels, this is the first I have read during this time period. What shines brightly within the narrative are the details the author has meticulously researched to create not only an intriguing romance between two people from different clans but an insightful portrayal of the lives and struggles of these people during the early Roman occupation of England. I feel truly educated having not only learning about the late iron age era but the culture of the people of this time. It's riveting, making compelling reading along with the fascinating relationship rituals woven in between.

With a satisfying conclusion and the foundations laid for book two, I can't wait to dive in and continue with this captivating tale of life during the Roman occupation.
