Publication Day Push: Never Fall For Your Fiancee by Virginia Heath

BLURB

Never Fall for Your Fiancée

The trouble with lies is they have a tendency to catch a man out.

The last thing Hugh Standish, Earl of Fareham, wants is a wife.

But since the only way to keep his mother’s matchmaking ways at bay is the promise of

impending nuptials, Hugh takes the most logical action: he invents a fake fiancée.

It’s the perfect plan – until Hugh learns that his mother is on a ship bound for England to meet his ‘beloved’. He needs a solution fast, and when he collides with a mysterious beauty, he might just have found the answer to his prayers.

Minerva Merriwell is desperate for money to support her sisters, and although she knows that posing as the Earl’s fiancée might seem nonsensical, it’s just too good an offer to refuse.

As the Merriwells descend upon Hugh’s estate, the household is thrown into turmoil as everyone tries to keep their tangled stories straight. And with Hugh and Minerva’s romantic ruse turning into the real thing, is true love just one complication too many?

‘Filled with fabulously British banter, wit, and heart,

this delightful book is one of my must-read rom-coms of the year’

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Twenty-two books and two Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, and it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

Release Day Review: Redeeming The Reclusive Earl by Virginia Heath

Redeeming the Reclusive Earl by Virginia Heath

His heart is a fortress… And she’s trespassing!
After losing all he holds dear in a horrific fire, Max Aldersley, Earl of Rivenhall, shuns the world—until he catches Effie Nithercott digging holes on his estate! He banishes the intrepid archaeologist and the unsettled feelings she rouses within him. But she returns even more determined and infuriatingly desirable than before! He wonders just how deep she’s prepared to dig—so far she’ll reach the man beneath his scars?

Max Aldersley, Earl of Rivenhall wants to live a quiet life and most importantly, alone. After surviving a horrific accident, leaving him physically scarred, he's withdrawn from society after giving up his career at sea. Instead, he's found refuge at the estate he's inherited from his uncle Richard. Unfortunately, much to his irritation, he finds out a neighbour is trespassing his land. Even worse, she's female.

Euphemia "Effie" Nithercott is passionate about what she believes in, and it's a lot! Highly intelligent, she spends her days excavating a site on Earl of Rivenhall's estate. That's until the new earl forbids her to continue her work. Frustrated by the new owner's lack of understanding, Effie won't take no for an answer. Infuriatingly, neither will back down from their opinion, but as time passes and the two spend more time together, each begins to understand the other's point of view.

I did foresee how the narrative would evolve, however, the author skilfully keeps readers enthralled with Effie and Max's relationship as it unfolds. It highlights the personal struggles the protagonists are suffering but as time passes, after many irritating conversations, both finally find common ground and mutual respect. It began as a battle of wills but thankfully ends in a meaningful and unexpected relationship. The dialogue clearly accentuates the frustration and determination of both perfectly. It's full of humour, compassion and empathy.

Encased in a well-thought-out plot, full of fascinating information and detail,
Redeeming the Reluctant Earl is another fabulous novel by one of my favourite authors.

New Release Spotlight & Review: Lilian and the Irresistible Duke

Lilian and the Irresistible Duke by Virginia Heath

A reunion in Rome…Sparks an affair to remember!
Responsible widow Lilian Fairclough is persuaded to travel to Rome for a hard-earned break and to let down her hair! She’s surprised to be reunited with passionate, cynical Italian duke, Pietro Venturi. He reawakens her sensual side and intrigues her with glimpses of pain beneath his rakish surface. Enticed into a secret and temporary affair – what will happen once she returns home?

I had no idea before reading this delightful novel that it's the fourth book of the multi-author series; Secrets of a Victorian Household. Written by a favourite author of mine, Virginia Health, we follow widow Lilian Fairclough during an unexpected Italian adventure.

Lilian keeps herself busy but has somehow lost her way since the death of her dear husband. Without a defined role and conscious of getting older she reluctant to accept an invitation to go overseas. However, with some persuasion, she travels to Rome to stay with the family of her companion. Only, the head of the household is a man she's met previously during a flirty exchange…!

Pietro Venturi, Duca della Torizia can't believe the English woman he kissed whilst sharing a carriage with her during his last trip to England is staying as a guest in his house. With a mutual interest in art, he uses his knowledge to seduce Lilian, only he underestimates the attraction between them.

Much of the charm within this narrative is how it relates to my own memories of Rome. Ms Heath brings the city alive, describing the sights us travellers have visited or crave to see. The attention to detail is palpable as we learn about Pietro's work as an art dealer. Additionally, the heroine is a mature woman with a grown-up family. A widow, it's her children who encourage her to travel and it's a refreshing change to read about protagonists closer to my age! It's heart-warming to read about a forty-five-year-old, struggling to find a purpose who ends up falling-in-love with someone to share her life with, in a way she never thought possible.

To sum up, this is standalone with enough back-story to familiarise readers with the other notable characters whose stories have already been told in previous novels. Ultimately, it's a sexy romance full of intrigue and promise set against a stunning backdrop.

Release Day Spotlight & Review: The Determined Lord Hadleigh by Virginia Heath

The Determined Lord Hadleigh by Virginia Heath

Haunted by Penny Penhurst’s courage on the witness stand, meticulous barrister Lord Hadleigh offers her a housekeeper position at his estate. Despite trying to stay detached, Hadleigh is charmed by her small child and surprised by how much he yearns for this proud woman! Can this he break through his own – and Penny’s – barriers to prove he’s a man she can trust…and love?

I've enjoyed reading all the King's Elite novels and this one is my favourite.

Lord Tristan Hadleigh is a barrister for the Crown. When he sends Viscount Penhurst to the gallows, regrettably, it's his widow who testified against her husband who ends up losing her home after the Crown takes back the guilty man's title and assets. Feeling a sense of responsibility, he tries to aid the former Lady Penhurst, but his thoughtfulness backfires. Determined to get around the stubborn woman's reluctance for his assistance, he thinks up a perfect solution, not realising his idea triggers far more feelings than he ever envisaged.

Penny shed no tears when her abusive husband's murdered in prison before his planned execution. However, the freedom to pick up and rebuild her life with her young son is made more difficult when she loses her former home. Ever the resourceful woman, she has plans to improve her situation despite legitimate concerns from those close to her and especially Lord Hadleigh. When a temporary solution is proposed, she jumps at the offer to work as a housekeeper, but it awakens feelings she didn't know existed. Can she ignore them or should she follow her heart?

This is an achingly tortuous slow burn romance. The author manages to tease out every bit of combustible chemistry between Penny and Tristan- two people battling with mixed personal emotions as well as an attraction to each other. Like the other books in the series, the plot is intriguing although not quite the same fast action.

I especially like a hero's constant battle to do the right by Penny, even when it doesn't quite work as he intends. Lord Hadleigh is an intelligent, thoughtful gentleman but somehow still manages to underestimate situations after considerable contemplation. Penny is a proud woman who never plays the victim, but still harbours doubts about her unexpected attraction to a man when her memories of her marriage are negative.

To sum up, this is the fourth and last book in this King's Elite series. I heartily recommend them all.

Release Day Spotlight & Review: The Disgraceful Lord Gray by Virginia Heath

The Disgraceful Lord Gray by Virginia Heath

A spy on a mission…Until he meets this heiress!
Miss Theodora Cranford’s learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won’t be deceived by another man who can’t see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort – not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she’s sure there’s more to him than meets the eye… But after that first captivating kiss, she's certainly left wanting more!

Amazon UK      Amazon US

I've been looking forward to getting to know Lord Graham 'Gray' Chadwick since his appearance in an earlier instalment in King's Elite series. Like the other books, this is a standalone novel.

After spending ten years in the merchant navy, Gray is back and working as one of the King's Elite under the supervision of Lord Fennimore. Currently working in trying to capture The Boss, the head of a smuggling ring, the pair find themselves in Suffolk where their likely suspect, Viscount Gislingham lives along with his wife and niece. Only, the red-headed beauty proves to be a distraction in more ways than one.

Hearing a dog's distressing bark, the last thing Lady Theodora 'Thea' Cranford expected to see as she rushed to investigate the noise is the sight of a naked man's buttocks in her uncle's stream...a very pleasant view indeed. The good-looking gentleman is the new neighbour and a man of intrigue. He's far more fascinating than the suitors currently interested in her, so can she trust there's more to him than a potential gold-digger?

Gray and Thea are a perfect match for each other. Wary that her actions have tragic consequences, Thea is living a quiet life trying to avoid getting involved with suitors looking for a rich wife. In contrast, Gray is relishing the responsibility to prove himself honourable after disgracing himself shortly after coming of age. Years spent away has made him pragmatic and his more worldly knowledge helps to coax Thea out of her self imposed shell so she can again act and behave as she sees fit. Of course, this is to Grey advantage because even though he may be a reformed scoundrel, he's more than keen to get to know the real woman beneath the riotous red curls.

The author injects light humour into her writing creating a fun, vibrant narrative, littered with witty dialogue.

"Why couldn't he stop gazing at her when he knew he needed to focus on being a better spy?"

I'm not a fan of pets and children as secondary characters, however, Trefor definitely deserves an honourable mention. I heartily enjoyed the part he played in Gray and Thea's tentative courtship and how the humans didn't realise the impact he would have in differing situations.

To sum up, The Disgraceful Lord Gray is my second Virginia Heath novel and she has won a place on my favourite historical romance writers list.
